Topic: Isnt it obvious? Posted: 29 May 2007 at 6:02pm |
Since being on maternity leave, I have obviously been around to receive telemarketing phonecalls and visits from door to door sales people/researcher at home during the day. I find myself saying the same things to all of them along the lines of this:
Telemarketer: Blah blah blah, would you like to assist us by answering some questions, this may take up to 10 minutes blah blah..
Me: No sorry, it's not convenient for me to do this sort of thing as I have a young baby here with me.
Telemarketer: Would it be alright if I call back?
Me: Well no, because my baby is still going to be here then as well..
Ok so I know it's their job to call etc, but am I not communicating it clearly enough the first time so that they shouldn't have to insist on another call? It's no biggee really...just found myself saying it all again today and wondered if you all say the same sort of things?

I just usually say "no thanks I'm not interested" and if I ever have to say that twice, I'll be hanging up as I finish saying it Almost looking forward to the opportunity!
Door to door ones I don't get much though. I would find it much harder to be assertive in person.

Argh, this is so annoying!! A friend of mine told me a good repsonse the other day...
Telemarketer: May I phone you back at another time?
Me: How about you give me your number and I'll phone you back sometime?
(It's probably an old joke, but I thought it was funny)

LMAO Toni
I just tell them I'm a journalist. We're on the list of 'people not to be surveyed' as apparently we are potentially swayed by political/editorial leanings )ie.evil incarnate) Oh well, suits me

You can ask the Marketing Association to put you on the Name Removal Register and none of their members are allowed to use your details to contact you or else they face a fine (apparently). We did this some years ago after being totally hounded by telemarketers and now we very rarely ever get calls. They used to have an 0800 number but apparently that's closed down and you need to fill in a form now. Here's a link to their site:

They have a script to follow. I ask them to remove me from their call list.

trust us to have an Otara phone number - we get ALL sorts. Oh and our number is apparently very similar to pumpkin patch (down the road) and we get loads of their calls...mum even took an order from a very persistent lady one day...wonder if she is still waiting - she didnt beleive mum that it wasnt PP so mum took her order....served her right LMAO

I don't know - do you get annoyed when everytime you order somewhere like Mcd's, they ask you if you want fries with that? it is just what they need to say. Their calls are recorded and they would get poor marks if they didn't ask that (like secret shoppers check off if the service station guys mention the 2 for 1 lolly specials when you pay for gas).
I get a bit over calls from telemarketers too, but they are just people doing a job and obviously they get enough business to make it a job that needs doing, or else it wouldn't keep being done. (I do love surveys though).
And of course I am not talking about the new breed of telemarketers who get rude if you try to end the call, but they tend to be scams rather than real services/products.
And the give me your number joke - that started on Seinfeld.

the worst one I had was when I was in the hospital with Jack and we had a recorded phone call from a mortgage broker come through to the phone in my room, no idea how as the phones are through the switch board.
I actually had the rudest one last night, I told her I wasn't interested and she instantly hung up the phone, not good representation for the company.
And as for incorrect numbers, I used to work for a company who had a similar number to what now, and on Sundays there was always a kid that called demanding that we were what now and that we were lying and then would get quite rude and swear at us, quite unbelievable really for a young person the language he used.
The one that frustrates me the most is sky, we have sky yet we still get called asking if we want to take advantage of their latest deal. The last one offered us 2 months free rental. I said it sounded like a great deal and the girl got all excited, till I asked if they would be crediting my account with the 2 months rental, I am so mean hehehe

i try and be as polite but firm as possible, unless im really bored and then i answer the questions.
Im probably a bit more sympathetic tho as my mum is a market researcher and i know its not the best job in the world cos you always feel like your intruding, well my mum does.
And yeah, they usually do have to check if they should call another time, but as Miss said they are just doing their job

We frequently get calls from Telecom, trying to attract us back (we get everything through Slingshot). Nat and I say that we would consider switching back if they (Telecom) could match the deal we currently have. When they ask what, we tell them how we get free tolls. Whoever we are talking to quickly admits they can't do that and the conversation ends. Works every time!

I generally try to be polite, but I had a really rude call the other night which made me wonder why I bother. I was trying to prepare dinner at the time and this was one of those calls where they blah blah blah the minute you answer and don't let you get a word in edgewise.
I cut her off after a bit and said I'm sorry but I should let you know that we don't have any spare money at the moment and the caller just hung up!
She rang back about 10 minutes later and started her patter again and I interrupted and said I already told you we can't afford it, and she hangs up again!
