    Posted: 25 June 2007 at 11:42am
I've done a search on this, because I could have sworn I saw a discussion about it a few months back but I couldn't find anything.

I'm wanting to know what kind of front pack is best to get. I'd like one that can take a newborn, ideally, and I'm willing to pay up to about $100. I don't mind getting a secondhand one either, so it can be one of the more expensive brands as long as there are secondhand ones available on trademe.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what types I should check out? Is there a 'best' type to get (you know, with buggies most people suggest P&T or Mountain Buggy - are there frontpacks that most people like?)

I have a Baby Gear one from Farmers and I DON'T like it. Here's my checklist for shopping for a front pack:
1. Is it easy to put on?
2. Can it adjust for use for mum or dad?
3. Can baby be forward facing, not just towards you (this is preferable for slightly older 4m+ babies, especially if everytime they are towards your breast they hope for a feed!)
4. Is there good head support

The Baby Gear one, IMO, is reasonable for #1, Yes for #2, but No for #3 and #4.

Have you looked into slings? I got a Heart 2 Heart one from TradeMe and I find it a lot easier to put baby in/out of especially when I have another preschooler to look after also.

I have an elite front pack from the baby factory aound $69 from memory.

Best thing i have invested in...you can use it with the baby facing you and then with the baby facing out...its really easy to put on with one hand (so you dont need anyone to help you) and the straps are adjustable so its easy to adjust it from me to hubby and back again

I use an ABC carrier and it is fabulous. Comfortable, can be used as front, back or side carrier and is only $57. Can't recommend them highly enough!

I've seen Paws using both her ABC's (yes, she must love them coz she has two!) and they look amazingly simple to operate, and Maddie seems happy enough in one.

I had a distastrous experience with a front pack with Maya, the one I bought was useless, put me off so much that this time I went for a sling instead.

I was given a brand new babygear one from my aunty and I honestly have no idea how the bloody thing works. I haven't used it yet and I seriously doubt I ever will. I thought I would use it but when he came out I couldn't see the point. So we aren't a frontpack family here.

My front pack was invaluable when I had #2. Especially because she was a reflux baby, sometimes I had the front pack just to get around the supermarket!

We are not a front pack family but I used a sling which we can use till about 3...altho do not use it now as he is walking and just far too heavy for me for long periods of time.
I paid less than $50 and got my $ worth more than twice over.

Another one I've just been told is good (but pricey) is the hugabub - anyone used one of these?

I haven't used hug-a-bub but that's the one I'm eyeing up for when the baby is born. I love that you have 4 positions to choose from (from traditional sling to outward facing for older babies)

I've done a lot of research on this and the most positive feedback I've had is on the Ergo Baby Carrier with infant insert. It is a front, side and back back. It is quite expensive new though, about $179 + extra for the infant insert. Might be possible to get it on trademe or something though.
