    Posted: 01 July 2007 at 12:30pm
Ok, so for the past few days to a week Sam has been constipated, and he still is. His poos are sometimes rock hard and he has trouble passing them. His tummy is also sore and a bit firmer/swollen from being blocked up. It is better this morning though.

My question is, Which formula is better for keeping the constipation at bay? I am using Karicare light blue and to begin with he had no problems but I wanted to try a different one so I put him on Heinz nurture gold and he was terribly constipated and grizzly the whole time so I threw the rest out and put him back on Karicare light blue. Now he is constipated again! I am worried about switching it again because I don't want it to get worse for my little boy as I hate seeing him squirm and scream in pain because of it.

He is otherwise a very healthy, happy wee boy.

Thanks in advance

We used karicare with Haleigh and we are using it for James.
My mw told me with Haleigh to give her 5 - 10mls cooled boiled water and that should help with the constipation, or talk to your plunket/ aritane nurse as there is a pharmacy product to help with constipation to.
Some formula fed babies get constipated, I don't think it matters what brand you use, it's more cause formulas not as watery as breast milk.

This is just our personal experience but when we started to exclusively feed Fay formula I continued with the regular karicare (pale blue one) and Fay was really constipated, same sort of thing that you have described with Sam. but I switched to the Gold Plus and have not had this problem again. This may not be a cure for everyone but I wondered about the Probiotics in the gold Plus as they are there to assist digestion. Any way that iw what worked for us. Otherwise we did the boiled water trick.

You could try a couple of sachets to try out and see if that helps rather than buying a whole tin

Thank you! I have heard before that the Karicare Gold+ one is good for digestion and was humming and haaing whether or not to switch again. I definitely think I will now.

A friend of mine uses Karicare gold and her daughter is extremely regular (poos still like bf) so she phoned the consumer line and was told there is some additive so babies don't get bunged up.
We changed from S26 gold to Nurture gold and have noticed a difference with Kaleb (poos were hard and greenish and now softer and browny) - all babies react to different formulas differently.
I suggest trying a bottle of 50mls cooled boiled water (perhaps in afternoon) or buying some sachets of the Gold formula to try. <Hopefully with having a little water each day you won't need to change formula>

Interesting topic- especially how each baby "suits" different formulas..
Trail & error with the formulas i think- or like they say "each to their own"
Hope you find one that suits soon Renee & definitely cooled boiled water to drink(maybe with a bit of brown sugar-for the fussy ones)

I gave him some brown sugar and cooled boiled water about 5 hours ago and nothing happened. Still no poos today.    His tummy is so blocked up and sore. He has his 6 week check on tuesday so will ask the doctor as well. Definitely will be trial and error. It's just the error part of it that is distressing.

The other thing which Fay loves and really helps her poo is to massage her tummy in a clockwise direction, sort oflike a backwards C. It follows the direction of the large intestine. Might be worth trying
Also GP if he is getting really uncomfortable as you might need something stronger to help unblock him now and then follow these tips when you are sorted

ETAOh and pushing her knees up to her chest and making her cycle with her legs in the air helps too

I know it is very distressing, but your doing your best
Maybe tummy rubs & bicycle leg exercises after the bath? to get the bowels going.
Definitely mention it to your doc or maybe if you need answers before then ring plunket line

ETA Redbedrock bet me to it!!

I mentioned this to my mw yesterday and she highly recomends karicare gold to prevent constipation.
or a teaspoon of prune juice in cooled boiled water, or the brown sugar in the water.

i agree wih the cycle motion with the legs. i used to do it after every feed with haleigh at no nappy time.

Yeah we do the knee bends/cycle movement too. At every nappy change.
