We are off for allergy testing this afternoon, I am really nervous for Mercedes, but at least we'll know what we're dealing with, and I'll get to find out if I'm right that Sienna isn't allergic to anything.
I'm also worried that the tests won't show anything concrete, and we'll be stuck with trying to work out what's causing her random reactions.
Willie is off work coz he's hurt his shoulder (long story, don't ask, let's just say he's not getting any sympathy from me!) so he is coming with me to help while they have their bloods etc. done. Poor little gremlins

They'll have the skin prick test and blood tests done today.
Your best bet is to see your GP and have them refer you to a specialist, either privately if you have insurance or publicly if not. They will organise the skin prick testing, altho for exczema it's a little more complicated as they have to do a patch test and leave the patches on for a few days with regular checks to see if anything is developing.
We have no idea what's causing Maya's exczema, I can't identify anything new in her diet or that we're using on her skin (washing powders etc.) that could have made it flare up, but it's nasty atm, and she is scratching like mad.

Good luck Gremlins!
AnnC - they can do patch tests, which usually comprise of little metal disc type things on your back covered in tape. How many things they are testing depends on how little they know of what's causing it. A friend of mine has just had one done, she had 20 discs on her back, but hopefully now they'll find out what her allergies are.

Good luck Emma and gremlins, hope the tests come back with some helpful results.
Ann, we got Han's testing done at our local MedLab, though you have to have a good GP who will take you seriously.

Good luck Emma et.al... fingers crossed that the RAST test gives you a nice clear cut list and a timeframe as to when the girls can start eating thingees again (yeah, okay, not likely but I can wish it for you)

Weeeeeell.... apparently "them chubbies" are allergic to nothing, and everything
Sienna, as expected, had no reactions at all on the skin test.
Mercedes reacted to all of the samples (milk, egg, peanut, soy, fish, banana) but also to the negative control which is water. But the specialist said that rather than indicating that she is allergic to all of the substances, it just means that she has super sensitive skin and the welt was caused by the pricking rather than the allergens. So in other words, she has no allergies.
Which is odd, coz she even tested negative to banana which we *know* she is allergic to as she has reacted. So she is off to Starship in a few weeks to have the banana retested with actual banana, and also the corn as she didn't have a sample there. She says there's no point doing a RAST at this point.
But for now she's happy for me to try introducing milk to them, she suggested starting by adding 1 tsp of baby custard to their normal breakfast, and if no reaction, increase the amount each day until they are having a moderate amount then we can try introducing yoghurt, cheese etc. They'll stay on the prescription formula till 12 months, then we can wean them onto normal cows milk.
I am soooo nervous! It was quite liberating going to the supermarket tonight and just being able to buy two tins of Watties baby custard as I've never, ever done that before, but at the same time given Mercedes history of reacting to things I'm not convinced I believe the tests.
Tomorrow morning will tell!

Arent skin pricks notorious for giving false results in littlies anyway? Sorry you didnt get any conclusive evidence Emma and that the custard intro goes without any dramas.

I hope everything goes well with the custard tomorrow Emma and that you will get more conclusive results at Starship.

Bugger that the results didn't show you anything overly helpful. Have you got a date for Starship yet?

Starship was supposed to be Friday but I postponed it till 27th coz the appointment was ridiculously early in the morning.
But so far so good with the milk. Maybe the total avoidance so far has done the trick and they have avoided the allergies? They tolerated the custard fine two days in a row, so I tried adding 20ml of normal formula to their Neocate and they were still fine, and now they're having 1/2 Karicare and 1/2 Neocate and tolerating it well. Mercedes exczema is shocking, but no worse than it was before we started the milk I don't think, so I'm hopeful that I'll be able to wean them onto normal formula in the next few weeks. The specialist said I should keep them on Neocate till 12 months then wean straight onto cows milk, but the dietician said I am better to start off weaning them onto a Starter (newborn) formula as the protein chains are smaller and less likely to cause a reaction, then to switch them over to Follow-on (6mth+) at 12 months and then normal cows milk at about 18 mths or so.
The best thing is they seem to like the custards/yoghurts, and they are taking the 1/2 and 1/2 formula fine which is awesome coz Maya still won't drink milk or eat much in the way of dairy products coz she never got used to them.

That sounds great Emma! You are giving me hope
Quick question if you dont mind me thread jacking, did you avoid anything during pregnancy and when? My plan (cos no medical person will tell me anything!) is no nuts at all, havent had any since found out pg, not to go crazy on eggs, dairy and fish, then cut all for third trimester and breastfeeding. We are seeing the dietician again in November so will ask then, but curious to know how you may have beaten the 80% odds with 2 siblings!!

I did no nuts for my whole pregnancy (except when I had a random muesli craving ), cut back on dairy and egg in third tri, then cut them out completely from when the gremlins were about three weeks old which is when Mercedes started having reflux problems. The specialist thinks they definitely had a cows milk protein intolerance as little babies, but that by keeping them on the Neocate from 10 weeks with no exposure to dairy etc. we've allowed their immune systems to develop a bit better and made them more resistant to developing allergies.
She also doesn't want them having egg until 2 years and nuts until 3 years just because they are still classified as high risk, and because she can't explain why Mercedes has these random outbreaks of hives.
My uncle has given me some new herbal stuff he concocted for Mercedes skin so I have my fingers crossed that it will help coz her skin is raw and bleeding around her eyes and forehead at the moment.
But there is hope for your wee bub! I think knowledge is the key, and you're going into it with your eyes open this time coz of what you've experienced with Hannah which gives you a bit of a head start.

Thanks It puts a bit of pressure of breastfeeding tho doesnt it? Means you cant just top them up with a bit of formula and no formula at the hospital this time - have to be really strict on that this time.

HORRRAAAAYYYYYYYY for the gremlins beating the odds!! Aw, I hope this is only going to get better for them, Emma - it's so exciting that they're 'coming right'! Be nice to have them totally out of the woods, wouldn't it.
Got my fingers crossed for your new bubba too, Aimee.
... gives me hope for Miss Ella too!
