I am 6wks pregnant and looking for work, just had a gr8 interview and really want this job. Do I tell them that I am pregnant, or when do I tell them? Can they fire me after a week or two? I plan to take very short leave and return to work asap.

Hi there, been there done that. Personally I would wait to tell them that you are pregnant. I found out I was pregnant with my first son, the day of my interview. I got the job and all was great until I let slip that I was pregnant. Two months later they "ended" my contract saying my position was no longer necessary. I was horrified to say the least at how rude they were & found out afterwards that they hired someone else in my place.

You're not legally required to tell them, but you should probably tell them anyway as it is good to start off on the right foot. Explain to them that you intend to take a short period of leave and then start back at work.

You won't be entitled to paid parental leave, or maternity leave, so it is up to the company whether they allow you to take leave after baby is born, or whether you have to finish work.

Hey Emma i thought the maternity leave had changed now and you only had to be working for a company for 6 months before you could take it? But then i havent read anything just info ive just picked up from somewhere and could be completely wrong, am too lazy to go to IRD and have a look.

You are not obliged to tell them and I don't think I would. They cannot not employ you or terminate your employment because you are pregnant, of course it is hard to prove if this is the case! And they can make things difficult for you!

I would not tell them throughtout interview process and then once you got the job, wait for a few weeks and then tell... or wait til you're three months preggers?

And Toni, if they hired someone in your old job, you can do something about that!! If you can be bothered, talk to the HRC about it and they'll advise you!! That is discrimination and very illegal!!

You are not obligated to tell tham and I wouldn't if I were you. I went to 2 job interviews, one at 8 weeks and one at 5 months and told neither.

Woman should not be discrimated against for being pregnant.

I once went to a job interview when the employer Said " I know I am not allowed to ask this but do you plan to have plan to have any more children in the near future" and I said " yes, you are not allowed to ask me that and no, i don't have to answer it"

I got the job.

Good on you Bridget....I would have done the same. If you are prepared to hire woman to do a job then be prepared that they will have children and will have to take time off work.

When I was hired here they never asked but knew that I had no children....my boss is awsome and has never ever said a word re me taking time off to go to my appt.

Yes the law has changed and you have to only work in a company full time for 6 months before your expected due date.

I complete a full year here on the 22 Nov and my baby is due 31 Oct...I thought I was not entitled to recv the paid parental leave but nop...I got a letter saying that it was approved and paymnt will be made soon after I finish work!

Yep, I just checked it out and it is 6 mths. As long as you do a minimum of 10 hours per week for that 6 mth period then you should qualify.

There's heaps of detailed info on paid and unpaid parental leave at http://www.ers.dol.govt.nz/parentalleave/general.html

Hi AnnaD. I could have gone back & done some serious damage to them. My union were all keen to get everything rolling but at that stage I was just sick of all the rubbish they were spewing out that I said nah bugger it. I know for a fact I'm not the only one who they have done it to either. My mum has worked there for 25 years now & she couldn't believe what they did to me, she ended up leaving too, which they were REALLY gutted about coz she was a manager at the Newmarket branch.
I certainly would not ever go back there, even if it was in another city or town or where ever.

When I was working I was employed for a 3month trail period before signing contracts, I did very well and they had told me I would have a perminent position there. after a month I found out I was pregnant, 7weeks after that I got heavy bleeding and had to take 2weeks off work and I was silly enough to tell them it was because of problems with my pregnancy. When I returned the 3months trail was up and they told me I wasn't suitable for the position. I was so angry, they were so lovely to work for until the found I was pregnant.

Hi girls, sorry I've been so quiet, but I got made redundant last week, and have been alternating between crying, to feeling useless, to stressing about money, to finally getting off my butt and getting a contract job! I'm freaking a little about what to do now, but have a months long contract earning top $$ and hopefully a maternity relief position to take me up to when I will want to be leaving for baby time.
Hope all you girls are good Any babies yet???

Contract work can be cool Claire. I'm technically self employed, I have my stuff that I do here at OHBaby! that is regular, and then I pick up other contracts here and there. Means that I can work from home, work around Maya, and pick and choose what I do.
