One of the teachers at Harrys creche has commented that his speech has deterioted over the last couple of months and have recommended that he see a speech therapist. Has anyone done this or have you done anything to help your childs speach?

First thing I would do is take him to the gp for an ear check. And s/he would probably refer you where you need to go next, if at all.

My son was born with a cleft so his speech has been monitored pretty closely. We have just done weeks of one on one speech therapy. They say he is within the normal range but more towards the bottom of the range.
As Teresa said, go to your GP and get his hearing tested, that can make a huge difference and then if there is nothing wrong that they can detect they can refer you to the hearing department at your hospital and they can then refer for speech therapy if need be. There is quite a range of acceptable level of speech so it really is hard to gauge but I know for example my sons childcare havent noticed any problems with kobes speech whereas our cleft clinic did so I wouldnt worry yet just get along to your doctor.

I took Maya to a speech therapist when she was 3, i asked the preschool to refer us thru the public health service as I was worried that she lisps and can't pronounce some sounds clearly. Turns out she has what is called an interdental lisp, basically means her teeth are too small to hold her tongue back when she makes some sounds and once she gets her adult teeth it should self correct.

We had this and had ear infections. Once we had grommets but in Andrew's ears he was fine. Def got to the GP and get the ears checked.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Josh had speech theraphy for 2 years (although he probably only say the teacher 5 times in that 2 years) were sent home with loads of words for him to pratise. He is much better now (hes 14 so you'd hope so) I watch videos of him as a child (like 3 year old) and I wonder how i made out what he was saying - Josh also wonders.
I would def get ears checked as this was part of Josh's problem the problem with the ears was we would get refered to specialist adn it would clear up so get sent away again.. grrr I really think he should of had gromits in.

Thanks - I'll start with the doctors and go from there. I'd like to get something started to help his speech prior to starting school
