Which nappies?

Hey everyone,
baby number one is on the way and starting to think about the joys of nappies. We want to use the modern cloth nappies but there are so many choices out there? How do we know which brand to choose? Any recommendations?

Hi there! I used cloth naps on my daughter pretty much from newborn, but mainly old fashioned type. So this time around I am getting a hire kit for the first 8 weeks, then I will go onto the stash of MCN I have. It will give you a good idea of how they work and what is best on your babe without having to spend the money on naps they probably wont fit for long.

i third the hire kit, greenbeans do them too i think.

also you might want to consider just getting prefolds and covers to start with as they need to be changed so much in the beginning. Prefolds can be used as stuffings for pocket nappies if you choose to use them later too. and allsorts of other things, burp cloths, change mats, spill cloths etc...

I haven't seen a hire kit but they seem good value.

I use FuzziBunz, I really like the pocket system (for easy washing/drying) and the different sizes (less bulk). Also - and I know this is contradictory to someone else's opinion, but it just goes to show how different everyone can be - I don't like velcro because it wears quickly in the wash and some little kids can open it. (FB has snaps.)

i don't like velcro either, kids can work that one out really quick. also, the one size nappies don't always fit a toddler so i found, too low in the rise

We started using MCNs when Kaleb was 6 weeks old. I use pockets and a couple of AIOs. I have some sized pockets but love my OSFA/most nappies and haven't had any problems with them. Velcro/snaps is personal preference - I personally prefer velcro at the moment as Kaleb has chubby legs and some snap systems don't fit too well on the bottom row.
You probably need to try a few out and a hire kit would be a good way to do this. I also know that you can use pockets as covers for prefolds.
You could always see if you can get an agent from one of the WAHM businesses to come and show you the nappies as well.

Just an aside, if a child gets in to the velcro, wouldn't they be able to open disposables as well, seeing as they're pretty much the same operation just different materials? And then what do you do when you use disposables and a 10-month old can get them off? I've never heard of that before, but definitely something to consider I guess.

Oh yeah, the OSFA thing is definitely OSFM. Try before you buy (in bulk) I say!

I've only tried 1 nappy with velcro and Caitlin whipped it off quicker than I could do it up! Same with sposies so you have to do up their onesies before they can get their grubby mits on the nappy!
