 Topic: Confused about nappies

Ok, I have calmed down after my swaddlebee pockets disaster (and am also reeling at the cost of sposies) and have decided to give the whole cloth thing another try. At the moment I have one Mummies Touch one size and a fitted swaddlebees that I am trying. Both seem to be working out well, I got 3.5 hours out of a MT with 2 microfibre inserts with no leaks and today I got 5.5 hours out of the swaddlebee fitted without any leaks. So I still have $250 dollars store credit and am trying to work out what will be best to get in the way of inserts so that I can boost the fitted naps to last thru a night and to boost the MTs for when out and about.
I have been looking on the net but am totally confused about hemp, microfibre, doublers, boosters, prefolds etc and have now given myself a headache.
Could someone please explain them to me?

Okay I'll give it a try...
microfibre is probably the most commonly used insert, it is white and several layers and is the standard sold with the likes of FuzziBunz etc, if you have seen them.
doublers and boosters are the same thing, one is the 'old' term and the other is the 'new'... I think that's how it goes. Anyway they are a shorter microfibre insert and are used to add absorbtion to another insert. They are also not as thick (not as many layers) as a microfibre insert.
prefolds I think are made of cotton? They are much like a traditional cloth nappy in a couple of layers and you fold them into thirds and then they are the right size to use as an insert. I don't know how absorbent or bulky they are, but they would probably dry faster than microfibre inserts because they unfold for washing.
hemp are a more absorbent material used for inserts. I don't know much about hemp because I have never seen it but from what I have heard, they are best used with microfibre (or some other insert) so that that insert can do the initial "catching" of the wetness cause the hemp takes longer to absorb - but does absorb a lot more. They sound excellent for nights.

What Teresa said is pretty much on the mark, except I've found that prefolds take ages to dry coz they have the thicker channel down the middle, flats dry much faster, prefolds take as much time, if not more, as microfibre.
Hemp is a slow absorber, so is bamboo, so yeah, good for nights. Hemp also takes ages to dry.

Ok sorry to be really thick, what is the difference between a flat and a prefold?

Okay here's a pic of a prefold
and I'm presuming you know what a traditional cloth nappy looks like? (AKA "flat") Just flat and square and white with a pink stripe on the side?

A flat is the same as an old fashioned white cloth cotton or flannel square.
A prefold is several layers (usually cotton) sewen together, then divided into 3 sections or panels lengthwise with a seam 1/3 of the way in from either edge. The centre panel is a couple of layers thicker than the outer 2, often 4-6-4.

Check out snazzipants.co.nz and spend a few hours reading all the pages. I learnt so much the other day!
Too add to your confusion have a look at joel-ezenaps.co.nz and her hemp/cotton burley knit terry inserts. I am finding those quite good at the moment.
Its all trial and error isnt it? I am slowly working out what works and what doesnt.

My mummy's touch seem to be working out really well, we had a small leak this afternoon but he had been in it for 4 hours and with only one insert, and it was just a tiny leak, was on his body suit but hadn't been bad enough to get on his baby grow. I have a one size mummy touch which might be a bit too bulky on a 3 week old, although having said that Spencer only weighs 4.7kg so he isn't exactly huge
