what causes this and is there some way of getting rid of it???
I thought it may have been the baby shampoo but i stopped using it and still had a problem

Spencer had this, I'm not really sure what causes it, he had a bit at birth and then it just seemed to get worse, he also had baby acne, thats caused by mums hormones being passed to baby, don't know if they are related.
We tried a few creams, nutraplus first as I didn't want to use the steroid one, that got rid of the acne but not the cradle cap so we ended up using locoid and that did the trick. I think you can just buy nutraplus, but it is free is you get a scritp from the docs

Astin had very bad hormone spots too but i loved it!! cos i was having breastfeeding probs and my MW said that it just went to show that he was getting a good amount of B/milk to get all the spots!  he was absolutely covered in them!

Cradle cap is nothing to be concerned about and it will go away once the baby's system gets itself organised lol. Sometimes that takes 3mos to 2yrs. Usually a bit of oil is the best way, and even brushing with a baby brush is really good cause it stimulates the baby's own body oils. You can often pick it off when it gets thick, with a baby comb (don't scratch the baby though lol!). But it's just cosmetic and it's fine to leave on.

Erin still has cradle cap and I have done nothing for it except brushing her hair, as busymum has mentioned it is really only cosmetic and her hair usually covers it anyway.

Daniel had some really thick cradle cap.. I read on a website that its caused by over active oil glands under the skin and it causes the skin to like crust over..
The website I read said to use almond or olive oil in the hair to soften it and then get it off the scalp and then shampoo regularly to keep it at bay... it's worked for us, once I got it off Daniel only has a couple of small spots where he has it now, whereas before it was really thick and covered half his head. We just put a lil shampoo in his hair every couple of days to keep it away. If the oil glands can "breathe" then it stops the cap forming.

Ella has a bit of cradle cap at the moment as well. I rub some almond oil on her head and leave it on for a while and then gently bush her hair. This worked quite well for us and the cradle cap is nearly all gone.
We also wash her hair every night.

Caitlin had it too. I massaged some warm olive oil into her scalp, left it over night then picked off the scabs with a comb. She didn't mind at all and it's never come back

Yeah I probably should have said to start with the olive oil. Spencer's got all weepy and horrible which is why we used the other creams. He still has some now which we manage with brushing etc. Don't know why it got so bad as had been washing everyday and using oil, me and DH both have bad skin so i suppose he was never gonna have great skin.
My m/w said that her spottiest baby was also her spottiest teenager, so that's something for him to look forward to

You might find its related to the formula issues.. DD had it really bad before we figured out about her intolerances and allergies

i put a little baby oil in their bath and it manages to keep it at bay my oldest had quite a bit used oil on her head to get rid of most of it then oil in the bath kept it away. with my second i put oil in her bath from word go and she never got it. my girls are blond and were very bald so you could really notice the yellow scabs on her head.
