Our washing machine is about to give up the ghost and hubby and I have been shopping for a new one - only he wants a front loader and I want a top loader cos I think they're quicker. First baby on the way, I figure the faster the better! Can anyone recommend a good washing machine, or have a front loader and know if they do take much longer? The shops don't have much info about cycle times so its hard to know if front loaders really do take that much longer...

We have a front loader, they are way more efficient, efficient equals cheaper, which is always good. We have a samsung which is really good and was pretty cheap to buy as well. We got ours from Harvey Norman, they have some quite good info on the washing machines they sell, plus you can always google any model that you are interested in.
I'm not sure how long top loaders take to wash, I'm English and the whole top loader thing to me is just weird. My front loader takes 1 hour and 40mins on a coloured wash, I think 2 hours for cotton wash, 40mins for wool/hand wash, 35 min quick wash.
We wash most things on quick wash, expect wool and nappies.
Our washing machine uses 147Kwh per year based on doing 365 cotton washes at 40 degrees. No top loader comes close, there is no stupid spindle thing for clothes to wrap themselves round, they use less water and less detergent.
Consumer mag did a thing about washing machines awhile ago, and a top loader won, sorry can't remember exactly which one but pretty sure it was a whirlpool.

We have a f&p 6.5kg, & find it works great for us but they also have a new on out that is meant to combine the best atributes of both top and front loader. It is a top loder with out the spindle so you would beable to get more in. Maybe look up website to check what they say about it. Good luck

We have a front loader (ariston) and while it does take a bit longer (you can set it on rapid) it's far better. We immediately noticed a difference with how clean our clothes were and much more gentle on the washing (which I find great with all the quilting I do). The whole economy thing is great too, not as much water heats it's own hot etc. Besides the other day starting at about 8.30am I managed to get 5 loads of washing washed and dried!! So it can't be that slow!!
