Our Son has been confirmed with peanut ang egg allergies. We saw the specialist yesterday and our son nows needs to wear a medic alert bracelet and we also need to purchase approx 3x Adrenalin Eppipens at $112ea. The pens also only have a shelf life of a year! When it comes to you childs life you do everything you need to do. Most countries (excluding New Zealand) actually subsidise the eppipens, even Australia does. However the Doctor thinks that we should be able to get a child disability allowance to help pay for the pens.

Any body out there with children with allergies?

Welcome to my life! Maya was allergic to milk, egg, peanut and soy and has now outgrown it but we had several months of her being in and out of hospital with allergy-related issues. Sienna is allergic to peanut, yet to have a follow up RAST to determine how severe it is, I suspect Mercedes is also allergic, and we are keeping both of them egg free.

I get the CDA for all them, it's only $35 per child per week but it does help with the cost of the seemingly endless doctors visits, specialists visits, testing and prescriptions. We're lucky that we have so far avoided needing Epipens, but we had the gremlins on Neocate for the first 10 months of their lives and Maya was on Pepti Jnr then Neocate for nearly 2 years and the CDA helped with the cost of that as well.

Maya needs a medic alert bracelet for Sulpha allergy, but I haven't organised it yet, she's at an age where she's never at the doctor without either Willie or I, but I will get her one before she starts school next year.

Go to WINZ and ask for the forms for a child disability allowance and get the doc to fill it out. Like Emma said its not much - $78/fortnight - but definitely helps. We have an epipen as well, but have to pay $198 each (bloody pharmacy), and just because they have a shelf life of one year doesnt mean you get them when they are fresh! Our last one only had 7 months on it, but CSL (the company that manufactures them will give you a discount on your next ones). Have a look here for a $20 discount voucher (bottom of the page). Also allergy NZ - it doesnt cost much to join and there is so much information available through them.

Oh yeah, should say my Hannah (2) is allergic to milk, eggs and nuts.

How old is your son? We have only ever had one epipen for Hannah as she is always with me, her dad or grandma's, so dont need to leave them anywhere (like daycare, school...) and havent worried about a medic alert braclet yet for the same reason. Will get one if she still has allergies when she goes to school.

The food allergy cookbook is also great for baking ideas. Are you being referred to a dietician? Ours gave us lots of recipes and ingredient substitution ideas - plus all of us on here with allergy kids can help you as well

I think it is totally outrageous that people have to pay any money for anything medical and I think it is trully shocking that you have to pay for life saving eppipens for your child. I pay so much bloody tax, where the hell does that money go that we can't have a decent health service in this country?!?!?!?!?

Spencer has an allergy to cows protein and we are currently waiting for funding and a script for neocate and will need to be on the lookout for any other allergies that he may have.

I am so so sick of the health service in this country, it is beyond a joke.

I thought the UK was crap but at least it was free.

Another allergy Mum here- Charlotte has peanut anaphylaxis, moderate allergies to Eggs, Dustmites, Tomoatos, Fish and numerous other mild allergies wheat, red grapes, kiwi, dogs...

The UK is brilliant- we have 5 epipens for Charlotte and they were all free. All Drs visits and scripts for children are totally free. Luckily we got Health insurance for her before she was 3 months so all her specialist appointments were covered under that but we still had to pay for the epipens when we were in NZ. Join allergy NZ and write to your local MP. There is info on the net as well about petitioning parliament to get them subsidised. Its absolutely ridiculous that a lifesaving drug isn't even slightly subsidised by the government. Definitely apply for the disability allowance asap- its not much but it helps.
