Topic: my crazy addiction Posted: 31 October 2007 at 1:39pm |
right, so im 32 weeks pregnant now and since about 27 weeks pregnant I have gained a strange craving to ground coffee (the powder itself)
I usually dont drink coffee - and i still dont drink coffee however, i am throwing a spoonful of the ground coffee mixture (mixed with a bit of ground cardamon) and i roll around the mixture in my mouth and grind it as if i was grinding sand. the intense flavour and the strange texture really makes me forget everything else and i feel sooooooo much better.
and if i dont have the jar of this mixture around me wherever i go i will get soooo cranky and throw a fit at anything.
its gotten so bad that my family are all hiding all these jars but i can easily make some more of this sandy mixture.
I havent had anything like this during my pregnancy until since i was 27 weeks pregnant. Is it really really that bad to eat ground coffee?

Ive read about weird pregnancy cravings in one of my preggo mags. Some women crave dirt and sand etc! Its one of those weird preggy things! Maybe mention it to your midwife. But dont think you are weirs cos I bet many women have the same thing!

Does sound odd, but then I ate xmas pudding at 3am so I can't talk. I would be a little concerned about it being coffee, is there anything else with the same texture that might satisfy your craving?

OOh now I dont feel like such a freak with weird cravings. Im not craving to eat stuff, but smell stuff. In fact just about anything toxic e.g petrol, flyspray, my ventolin, exhaust fumes. Im resisting with all my might, but I can tell you, I LOVE filling up my car with petrol at the moment
As your consuming it, i would possibly check with you mw. Are you going for decaf?

There is a craving some woman get for metal, like sand etc and it can be linked to needing iron in your diet etc.
Not sure if coffee fits into this category, but i would be wondering what the effect of all that concentrated caffiene is having on bubs and you.

Pumice? How very odd
Ok, I'm the same as JD - The smell of Chemicals is one I'm finding hard to resist, but believe you me, I'm trying with all my might. Duck for Bathrooms is a fav of mine. Lol

It doesn't sound too bad to me, so long as you're not having 'too much' caffeine (for the baby). But then, no one knows how much 'too much' is I'd definitely bring it up (not literally!) at the next mw meeting.

I would say bring it up with your midwife and maybe switch to decaf.
I craved toothpaste when I was pregnant and brushed my teeth eight times a day sometimes. I just had to have it and sometimes I just ate it by itself.

lol ok i feel much better reading all these posts.
i dont know why i didnt think of the decaf idea.
last time i saw my midwife (when i was in UK) was wen i was 28 weeks pregnant but i didnt admit that i had a strange craving then and now that i moved back here from england i got a new midwife and shes been away for a while now but i am seeing her this week. so havent had the chance to discuss it with midwife yet.
i have been noticing that the baby is kicking more and becoming even more active than usual. i think its the caffeine
however im having about 3 spoonfuls a day
and my gp said i could have 400mg of caffiene a day....
if im out and dont have any ground coffee with me ill start grinding my teeth and it gets tot he point where i actually chip my teeth or filings
thanks for your advice ladies xxx

but i would mention the coffee thing to the mw. i know they say not thave anymore then 3 cups of drink with caffine in a day(like, coffee, coke, tea)

Yes! Go the icecubes!
I've been making up ones with juice if I need something to fix my sweet tooth.
Mmmmm... I'm off to find the ice now
