Bombshell's topic on private schools got me thinking but didn't want to hijack her thread.
We haven't decided what we'll do once the kiddies reach high school, but for primary & intermidiate I'm thinking just the local school. However, I don't like the schools around here and my MIL & FIL live in Remuera in all the "right" school zones - there is a primary school just a short walk away. Does anyone know if we can get them into those if we 'register' them under the MIL & FIL address. The idea is, they will be picking them from school anyways and looking after them until we finish work so will be both handy & good school too

I'd say the school will ask why the children aren't living with you, so unless you all 'live' at their house then it will be a bit strange.

You can always put your children in for the ballott???

When you fill out the application form you have to sign a declaration to say the children really do live there. We had to get ours witnessed by a JP. Some schools (like Auckland Grammar) employ people to check up on students to see if they really do live there. If they find out they have never lived there (using an address of a family member) or no longer live there they kick them out. It all depends on the school.

Nyah is an out of zone enrollment for her school and we also had to sign a declaration and provide a proof of address. So you could run into problems there...

they are now investigating a lot more...even in some of the less popular schools

I wouldnt chance it to be honest....Id apply out of zone mentioning that your In laws would provide before and after school care often etc....

I know that some school in Palmy (of all places) check addresses for Primary schooling with the zones.

Years ago my friends parents tried to get their son into boys high and used a "family" address - they got found out and he had to leave.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

MIL who is a senior review officer for ERO said that as time goes on more and more schools are going to get tougher about zoning and people using relatives addresses. So I wouldn't even bother trying it.

We got Maya into an out of zone school, it's a Catholic school so the rules work slightly differently (as in they make up their own rules!) but we did have to enrol her when she was like 18 months old and even then they couldn't guarantee her a place.

Would you consider moving to a 'better' school zone?

Wish we could affor it Emma but we just bought 2 years ago and other than for the schools, really like it here. It's not so much that the schools are bad, it's that they are heaps better where MIL & FIL are. Guess we'll cross that bridge when we come around to it. Thanks everyone!
