I think I'm having an over-sensitive day!

We have 3 children who are all different looking to each other. Rico is dark with big chocolate brown eyes, like his dad (whose half Maori), & Gia & Jett are fair like me & blue-eyed (which is bizarre considering both DH & I are have brown eyes).

Jett however does have a auburn tinge in his hair, which EVERY man & his dog have picked out & make it their perogative to comment on. I think Jett is absolutely GORGEOUS & don't care what colour his hair is. It depends which light he is in. At night, he looks dark. In the morning when the sun is on it, you can see the auburn.

I'm just getting sick of the "oh he's a ginga" comments! Like it's a bad thing, cos' it's followed by a giant roar of laughter! NEVER have Rico or Gia had comments like "Oh, he's got dark hair HAHAHAHAHA!" or "She's blonde HAHAHAHAHA!"

Why can't people just say "he's gorgeous" & leave it at that, instead of "uh oh, I think he's going to be a ginga..... but he is gorgeous". The "ginga" part is always said in a negative way which is what is getting to me.

It's just all come a bit much now & today I actually feel like crying about it. What set me off was my SIL whose staying with us. She said she's updated her blog on her website & was saying how she's been staying with us & talking about the kids. She said she put - & I quote - "Jett what can i say just a stunner with that 'RED HAIR' ". He's perfectly healthy, growing so well & is a happy boy whose always got smiles for you, & THAT is all she can put about him - HIS hair colour!!

I'm over those sorts of comments now. He's only 11 weeks old, & I know they're only going to continue if his hair colour stays with the auburn. But I think the next person who comments on it is going to get an earful from me!! BECAUSE DOES IT REALLY MATTER?!!? The only thing that matters to me is whether or not he's healthy & progressing well, in which he is. I love him to pieces, he's a wonderful little boy & it hurts me when people can be so insensitive about their comments!

I for one can't understand what the attraction/dislike is about ginger hair.I mean it's just another hair colour. Personally I think it can look absolutely stunning on some people. As I'm sure it does on your wee boy.

Italiah, my dd is the same with her hair colour. I just ignore the comments and don't let it get to me. It will be interesting to see if her hair colour changes over time as in some light it looks really light blonde, other light its strawberry.

And just so you know i think Jett looks very cute and will just become more adorable every day

I just find that some people look at your baby to find faults?!? Or is that just with my children?

Like I said, they say the negative comment, followed by a positive. Why point out what THEY THINK to be negative to you? I think the comment made by my SIL just tipped me over the edge with it all.

It will be interesting this weekend, as my sister is having a HUGE 10th Wedding Anniversary party & a lot of friends & family that haven't seen Jett will be there. I'm dreading already what sort of comments I'll get.

i know this isnt exactly the same situation Italia but my DH is half maori and our wee girl came out as pale as anything.
all people could say when janaya was born was "OMG shes white" or "are you sure shes your DH's?"
shes blue eyed, as pale as anything and has blondish/brownish hair. why cant they just say "gosh shes beautiful" or "shes lovely" ....people treated her as if she was a freak of nature!

it actually got to the point where i was warning people that she was white before they met her, just to avoid the "OMG". it was really upsetting and it still gets to me 4 years later.

I'm a 'ginga' but in the last few years it's turned what some people call strawberry-blonde now... and I have to say that after coming to terms with the red I grew up with, I feel a little bit offended that someone would call me any form of 'blonde'!!  Crazy eh.  Ella gets lots of the 'ginga' jokes - and might I add her's isn't bright bright red, but yes, it's definantly red, and I love it.  I got picked on at school for being a 'carrot top' and as a kid that used to really upset me, but it's just one of those things - can't stop people making cracks about it, but if the people close to you know you're sick of the jokes, then they can at least stop trying to be funny by cracking them, so tell them where to shove it.  Personally, I have to be in the mood to handle the word 'ginga' - and some of our mates who constantly cracked jokes about "it's definantly gonna be a ginga" while I was pregnant REALLY got on my nerves.  But I'm sure they have to admit, Ella is gorgeous with her lovely hair, so nah nah nah to them!

FYI:  I know two of the sort of gorgeous women who could have any guy they like, who are hot only for red-head guys.  So there we have it.  Red is hot too!

Gingers are the coolest Italiah, and don't let anyone suggest otherwise!!

Although, having said that, I've been taking the p*ss out of DH chronically this month as he's growing a beard for Movember, and it's come out really ginger

I don't know what it is about Gingers that people love taking the mickey including Gingers taking it out of themselves

to you and try not to let it get you down.

People seem to think that it's an allowed sl*gging. I'm sure no one actually thinks that it's offensive or annoying in any way. However I know there's only so many times you can hear the same comments over and over again.

Off topic but DH doesn't drink. And people seem to think that it's the funniest thing ever an Irish man not drinking. He often gets asked 'But you drink Guinness don't you?' We also had a neighbour when we lived in Hamilton who would say 'Top of the mornin' to ye' every single time he saw us! We were not sad to leave that street!

My kids are complete opposites to each other don't even look like brother and sister, my dh is part maori too, my son is olive skin , dark hair and deep brown eyes nearly black, my daughter is strawberry blonde, fair skin and blue eyes , I have brown eyes olive skin and dh has greenie brown eyes. I think it's cool that they look diff, boy takes after dads side and girl is spitting image to my side.

One main reason why I don't like Mark Ellis anymore cos of his ginga comments. t**ser.

I hate it when people say, ha ha you are going to have "ginga" kids, so? I like my red hair, it is different! Makes it easier for me to be spotted in a crowd, especially when we were travelling through China.

Of course I got hasseled when I was a kid and always hated being so white, but there would have been something else I would have been hassled about if it wasn't my hair. I would love to have a red head child (but just have my red head fur baby at the moment). I am not sure why in the past couple of years the world seems to have gone so anti-ginga!

These days it is mainly old ladies saying how lovely my hair is .... not that you are an old lady Paws.

I don't look anything like my siblings either, they're all blonde and blue eyed (altho the blond is from a bottle these days!) and I'm very dark haired and green eyed, we always got comments about it when we were kids.

As for the ginga comments, I have to say two of the coolest people I know have ginger hair - Ginger and Andie's Ella, and it doesn't define who they are! I think Ella is absolutely gorgeous, one of the most beautiful kids I've ever seen and Ginger is just an absolute sweetheart.

I wish the world would just lay off the gingers!

Just because DH is half maori, everyone expects ALL our kids to be dark. But they only have a quarter Maori in them, so why should they be? Everyone is shocked that 2 out of 3 children are fair & blue-eyed. But I'm fair - so why can't they be fair like me? Just all silly really, like i said - I think I'm over an over-sensitve day!

Even DH jokes about "who is Jett's real father" because of the auburn in his hair. So that's hard to hear as it makes me feel like he can't accept his child not looking like him. Rico is nothing like me, but I'm proud that he looks like his father.

I think red is a great colour, and besides you can always teach them to turn around when someone calls then a ginga and say...well at aleast im not boring...lol

The ginger hair colour could actually come from your DH's side Italiah as Maori genes, when mixed with white genes can create a red hair colour for some reason.

My sister and BIL's nephew has dark skin like his father and the brightest red hair, it's absolutely gorgeous! He loves it cos his uncle calls him 'the ginger ninja'!

If you decided to retaliate, you could point out something you see as negative in family members! eg.:
SIL: Jett's got red hair HAHAHAHA
You: You've got a big butt HAHAHAHA

and see if she likes it then! (Not that it probably helps, but I thought it was funny as I was writing it)
