Topic: The poor peanut... Posted: 18 January 2006 at 6:55am |
So I've now found one book that says no peanuts and a lot of websites that contradict themselves. Has anyone else had any advice on eating peanuts during pregnancy?

I think the most logical advise I've been given about peanuts is:
"If you're even a little alergic to them or any close family member is then don't eat them at all. If you're usually fine with peanuts then go ahead and eat them but not in large amounts."
A friend who is a nurse has seen so many babies with alergy spots from them that she won't eat any. I did alot of research and I'll have peanut butter on my toast a couple of times a week but I don't eat them as a snack. It seems to be yet another thing that there is no rule book for and as a preggy lady we have to just draw a line in the sand. Good luck with makeing your decision. :)

Yeah that's what I read as well...but then I read something else that contradicts that entirely...
All I know is that there is a jar of peanut butter in my pantry with my name on it

you go for it paws! i'm a peanut butter addict and i had to give up so many of my delicious fave foods while preggy so figured a little bit won't hurt!
i agree with suzanne, if there's no family history of allergies, i wouldn't worry too much.

I had heaps of peanut butter while i was pregnant and also while Joey was tiny. The paed. at the hospital told me it isn' a good idea to eat peanuts while breastfeeding even if there is no allergy in your family... another bit of contradicting advice!

Salted roasted peanuts is what i craved for about 2 wks at the beginning of my pregnancy, eat them by the bucket full, i love peanut butter but i cant eat it.
But as is with most foods i have discovered that most thing i loved before i was pregnant i cant stand while pregnant.
My advice is just eat a little bit now and then besides if we followed everything we read or were told we wouldnt actually eat anything. i mean now we are being told that bananas are not considered a healthy fruit becuase of the sugar and that an apple has tsp for tsp the same amount of sugar as a can of coke (of course they aren't pointing out that the sugar is different)
Just eat what you want i say, and as long as you are healthy and baby is healthy thats all that matters.

im sitting here eating peanuts at the moment, i have to laugh everytime i talk to mum because her sentences always start with "In my day we....."
Mum ate peanuts, seafood, etc etc and had no problems, but then of course they probably werent as processed as the foods we get now.
Oh well im just going to eat what my body wants and then i know i cant go wrong.

Peanuts are only an issue of you have a STRONG family history of allergy (ie. you, your partner, sibling or parent) has an allergy to peanut, or other foods.
That said, there is no evidence that avoiding peanuts during pregnancy will avoid baby developing peanut allergy, or that eating them will cause it.There is research being done all the time but no conclusive evidence either way.
Maya's allergy specialist has told us that there is basically nothing we can do to avoid having another child with allergies, however she has recommended I avoid peanuts during pregnancy just in case.
Breastfeeding is a whole nother story tho as foods can pass to bubs thru the breastmilk. We found this with Maya who failed to thrive because she was getting traces of dairy thru my milk. So when breastfeeding a child with allergies or if you have a strong famiy history they do recommend you avoid peanuts and other potential allergens (in my case dairy, egg and soy).
Sorry for the novel, hope this helps.

Well after all this discussion I want peanut butter on my toast and we've run out at work. Sniff. I'll go and cry at our receptionist who orders it.

I have an intolerance to peanuts - basically if I eat them, my throat feels itchy...not life threatening in the least, but annoying. Jake had peanuts accidently, and has had no problems at all.

I used to eat peanut butter straight out of the jar when i was pregnant, but now i don't have that same craving for it.My doctor pretty much just told me when pregnant just to avoid the Deli section at the supermarket and seafood, said nothing about peanuts.
