hi ladies
I have a bad back and generally have a massage once a week since I sit at a computer all day and have back issues. I told my massage lady I was pregnant and shes stoped using smelly oils on me and said she read in her books that some say massage is safe and others say its not with releasing the toxins etc into yout body, she said to have a think about it if I wish to continue and that if I was to continue she would just massage my lower back etc lightly and keep the deep tissue stuff to my upper back......im a little paranoid with this pregnancy after my mc so was wondering is massage safe in earrly pregnancy? and throughout?

thanks ladies

Yep I massage preggy ladies, no reason why you can't have massage at any stage of pregnancy. But if you are not comfortable with being massaged during this time and feel like you won't be able to relax then just have a break from it for a while.

I heard you have to wait until 20 weeks due to the toxins released from the muscles...there are people who specialise in preggie massage, so might pay to ring around and ask.

I think the pressure has to be different.
Also massage isn't recommended in the first trimester.
However, I would recommend going to someone who specialises in pregnancy and talk to them about it.

I have a week lower back too so I know how you feel.
Another few suggestions I have would be possibly to look into pregnancy pilates or yoga classes. Also I'm sitting on a swiss ball at work which helps keep my back straight while working at my desk.

Massage is perfectly safe after the first trimester and it'll both help your back and help you relax also
I tossed between getting regular massages or reflexology. For no real reason I decided on the reflexology which I now get fortnightly and it's great to have the relaxation time to look forward to.

thanks ladies, at least ive only had one massage so far in my first trimester, think I will stop till im in the second trimester to be on the safe side. I live in a small coastal settlement so massage people are few and far between dont know of anyone here that specialises in pregnancy massage but I think the lady I go to has sone massages on pregnant woman before (further into the pregnancy) at least the holidays are coming up giving me 2 weeks away from the computer so hopefully I can stick it out till after 12 weeks im also having acupuncture for the pregnancy so he might be able to use some extra needles or something for my back?

I think some massage therapists who don't have knowledge or experience with preggies probably won't, but as part of my massage diploma we had a specific class on preg massage.

There is a bit about preg massage under Pregnancy and wellbeing section:

I had massages throughout my pregnancy and LOVED THEM I had weekly ones for the last 3 months. I got a bit bored of just having my back done so my massage therapist did some reflexology which I loved.
