Topic: Smelly wee...? Posted: 13 December 2007 at 4:12pm |
The last few nappy changes, I have noticed Bella's wee is smelling a bit off (usually I don't notice a smell at all). I don't know whether its anything to be concerned about as everything else is fine (no fever, no other probs) and was wondering whether its just the hot weather and perhaps she is a bit dehydrated (making her wee more potent??) But in the back of my mind I am thinking UTI...
Anyone else had a baby with a UTI or is it normal for their wee to smell from time to time??

Either that or she could be teething. I noticed Sam's wee got quite smelly just before her teeth popped through.

If you are worried about a UTI then the doc/nurse can give you a bag to stick against her and a stick to test for it. We have had to do it a few times. Pity babies can't pee on demand like us lol

I'd never heard of smelly wees when teething...always a possibility at this age I suppose! She needs to go to GP next week for 5 month jabs, so will also mention it then. Thanks heaps

Hmmm just keep a close eye on her! Ashleigh had smelly wees for a week or so when she was 5 months. I didn't think tooo much of it (a number of times we thought she had poo'd but it was only wees so that was kinda what it smelt like) then after a week and a few powerchucks she developed a temp. Doc sent us to hospital and we ended up being admitted for a severe UTI. I felt so awful for not taking her to the doc sooner

I have noticed in hot weather Tom's nappy smells more but I attribute that to his nappy and heat rather than the actual urine itself as I dont get to smell it as it comes out (no way my face is going anywhere near that region when he is uncovered LOL) I do remember as a newborn on ABs (I imagine sulphur based too) they REALLY smelt like rotten eggs. It was the only way I could tell he had peed. YUK!
Hope you get to the bottom of it or it all goes away.

Becks, Xanda quite often smells aa well and when I raised it with Dr, he told me that quite often boys urine smells a lot stronger than girls and is more concentrated.

Thought I'd resurect this thread as I am also curious... Bradley has had smelly pee for a couple of weeks but I didn't think anything of it as A) he's happy, healthy and fine. Been a bit fussy with the feeding (breast) but I think thats just that he's getting better at it and is actually done. and B) I tend to not drink quite enough water, but I'm working on that... and C) last night he was pretty grizzly and had a massive chew on my finger then a teething toy so perhaps teeth?
So, what conclusion did you come to ShellandBella and others??
Thanks heaps.

I can't remember now , but I had to see the doc about something else, so mentioned it and I do remember her saying that if all else was fine, probably wasn't anything serious. It went away - I think it was because it had been hot and she was slightly dehydrated...??
