    Posted: 20 December 2007 at 3:33pm

I need some advice.

I went my dr yesterday and we talked about my bleeding and that I can't have the Mirena yet but I do need Progesterone only to help me out. This is either the Mirena which I can't have yet, the mini pill - I refuse to go on it, and depo. Now I have never had it before but I did a search and read some of the horror stories about it.

For those that have had it:

  • Did you get a regular AF?
  • How long was AF?
  • When you came off it how long did it take to get pregnant?
  • Did you gain weight?
  • if Yes How much over how long?

Thanks for the answers.

i was on depo for 5 years..came off because doc was worried about my weight and the risk of blood clots.. I had no AF at all the whole 5 years.. and no actually problems while i was on it either.. although towards the end i noticed my mood was getting worse a lot of the time and it did get a lot better after i came off it.. not sure what that was about though..

I got taken off it in dec 2004, got AF back june 2005.. started trying in aug 2006 pregnant dec 06 then may 07.

As far as weight yes i gained weight but i think that was partly due to factors that weren't related to the depo..
I probably gained 10kg over the 5 years..but i was living away from Chch, homesick etc as well so hard to say I;d say maybe 5kg was because of Depo.

My regular doc said he wouldn't recommend it for people who haven't finished their families.. but for me it didn't affect fertility..

i havent been on it, but i have a couple of friends who have they both experience mood swings (one became such a witch on it that her family almost moved out), and they had weight gain.

I looked at the depo a few years ago but cos im prone to weight gain and depression i was advised to stay away from it as it can make it worse

I just asked my friend cause shes on it and she doesnt ever wanna have it again.

She has massive mood swings and finds her pnd worse but she isnt sure if thats related to being on it or just a coincidence.

She's gained 5kg so far and hasn't had a period yet (shes been on it 4 months)

I was on it for 7-8 years (and I loved it)

I didnt get an AF the whole entire time.

I didnt put on any weight ... in fact I lost over 30 kilos whilst on it (I was overweight when I went on it in the first place) ... however the weight loss was down to getting into body building not so much the depo.

I was advised to come off Depo at least a year before wanting to conceive, which I did.....it took at least 6 months for my AF to return ... and I actually got pregnant the first time we tried to conceive.

Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months)

I did it .. 41 kgs gone! From flab to fab in under a year LFs weight blog

I hate the thought that once you have it, the whole waiting time to get it out of your system if you have adverse reactions.
My sister gained nearly 20kgs in a year, suffered mood swings to the point of almost being suidicial, with low self esteem issues partially related to the weight gain. Basically it took the interference of our family together with a psychiatrist to get the medical help she needed and she now has the mirena. She should never have been prescribed depo in the first place as she has bone density issues and I understand it can affect calcium in the bones. She's never managed to lose the weight and now has Type II diabetes and ongoing allergies which may or may not be related to being on depo.

I didn't put on weight - depo apparently increased your appetite, rather than makes you put on weight directly.

No Af but some breakthrough periods - nothing to run to the supermarket about though.

I NEVER had adversse reactions to the pill (apaprt from pregnancy lol), but have heard that if you don't like the pill due to hormonal changes, depo might be worse.

I only had one depo shot and decided it wasn't for me, and we wanted to TTC. I didn't get AF whilst on it and didn't see her again for 3 years. I had to have tablets to get things going again. It took me 7 years to get pregnant naturally.

On the plus side i didn't put on any weight.

My doc will not prescribe this to people who haven't finished having their families due to the possible side effects, but everyone's different.

My sister was on it and was violently ill for 3 months, as once its in your system you can't get it out. No AF for her or any of my friends that have been on it. That can be good, but bad if you like to know what your body's doing etc.

If you don't mind me asking, is there a reason why you won't go on the mini-pill? Could you maybe just go on that and use condoms if need be until you're ready for #3? (Sorry don't know how long you guys are waiting for TTC#3)

I've been on Depo a few times. I have never had AF while on it. As for weight gain, last time I was on it, I put on about 15kg, but it was for different reasons than being on Depo - more to do with crappy food and no exercise. Depo increases your appetite, rather than actually making you put on weight. Last time I came off it, I had my last shot in August 05 and AF came back in May 06, so about 6-7 months after (shot was to wear off in November 05). I had no side effects. This time (I went back on it in October) I haven't put on any weight so far, in fact have lost it, but I get very emotional (not moody, but teary eyed) and get a lot of nausea, and also get some (but very little) period pain when I don't even get AF. I am getting my last shot in April or July next year, because I don't want to stay on it too long. I have no idea if Depo has stuffed with anything in my body, although I had 2 m/c after coming off it last time and have been diagnosed with endo - whether they're related to Depo I have no idea.

If you want to TTC in about a year, I would say Depo may not be for you.

I haven't been on it myself but my good friend had it when we were at uni- she was kind of my guinea pig as I was seeing how she went with it before I tried it! She had her period non stop for 6 months! Obviously I decided to steer clear of it myself

I think Becks it is one of those things that you dont know how you will go on it until you have tried it. I know may people who are on it and find it fab. I also know a few people (young) who are on it to control AF.

Basically it puts your AF to sleep the same as the mirena (hormone) does just in a slightly larger dose.

AS for weight gain, it CAN cause an increase in appetite when you first start taking it but if you keep eating as usual this will pass with no weight gain HOWEVER with anything, if you give in to your increase in appetite then its inevitable you are bound to grow

I won't be using it for contraception, as having DH away will be good enough for me .

It was suggested by my dr as I need more progesterone in my body to control my excess bleeding I get at AF time.

I have been on the mini pill before and it made me bleed the entire time so it wasn't for me and I can't take the combined pill as it has estrogen in it and I don't need anymore of that.

I had a read up on the med safe website and for people with endo you can have jabs of it weekly or fortnightly of a smaller dose and it'll help your endo big time so I may talk to my dr about that option on Monday.

I was on depo for 6 months (2 shots) about 3-4 years ago. The first one was fine - thought it was great, no AF (only a little when time for the next jab). A month into the second jab though, I started break-through bleeding CONSTANTLY. Sex was a nightmare, cos I'd bleed every time, as was exercise of any sort. Again, nothing to run to the supermarket about, but it was 2 months constant, and not fun. Went back on the pill, and have now been off that for 6 months (NFP) and have regular cycles.

i used it, and put on a tremendous amount of weight and developed depression.
Sure enough once the provera was allowed to run out of my system my depression disappeared. It took a good 5 months, worst time of my life.

Of course that does not happen with everyone, i just reacted badly to it.

Did you get a regular AF?
No, no AF at all. Did get some spotting and breakthrough bleeding occasionally.

When you came off it how long did it take to get pregnant?

Was years ago, but I know some people have taken over a year to get sorted. I know it took ages to get my period back afterwards.

Did you gain weight?
yes, before depo I was normal, afterwards I gained heaps and if I had my life over again i would not use it.

I also know a lot of people who lost their sex drive on it, although I never experienced that.
