So, what have you got planned or are thinking about for your 4-6yo child in the way of extra-curricular? I'm thinking dance, drama, sport, swimming, music lessons or similar. We're considering enrolling Hannah in ballet, think that would really be her thing, any tips or thoughts or anything else?

Well, we are a wee way off the 4-6 year old age group but I am the extra-curricular queen so have already been talking to DH about stuff we'd like DD to do (providing she enjoys it, of course). We are both from swimming families and DD loves the water so swimming is high on the list. I was a dancer as well, so if DD is that way inclined that would be cool, although I think probably jazz ballet to begin with as it's less strict than ballet (although it depends on where you go). I would also love for DD to get into something that DH and I have no experience of at all, so exciting to think of the things we could learn from her interests. I figure if she wants to try lots of different things then we'll let her, within reason (cost etc. being a factor). Athletics is also a good one for young kids because they get to try heaps of different stuff - running, high jump, long jump etc. and they have fun club meets where they can win ribbons.
Oh, now I want to find out more about this stuff too - way too early I know! Exciting that you can do this with Hannah, I'll be interested to hear what she does and how you find it all.

Andrew is about to go back to doing swimming next year if he gets the all clear from the dr. He has done gym and it is something we may look at again next year but go to a more structured gym.
With Andrew he needs to be kept busy so I am going to look at dance for him or athletics. He will probably play soccer next year as there is preschool soccer in Palmy now.
He also loves his music so I may look at him learning to play when he is about 8.

We both want our children to be involved in either Scouts or Guides, you can start Pippins and Keas at 6. They give kids great skills and experiences.
And definately swimming, our children will be in the pool as soon as they are old enough.
My niece does ballet, its fantastic for her co-ordination, and helps with her legs/balance etc which is great as she had a bit of palsy in her hips from being a premie.
About the only thing I don't want them to do, is anything horsey, after watching the behaviour of the little girls at the Ohakea Saddlery Club gymkhana what a bunch of pretentious girls.

we want our boys into sports as much as possible - team sports are excellent ways of making your kids on the right track. Maybe music when he gets older. He loves singing and dancing, but I'd love to see him play something - if he is into it.
For now, jake goes to daycare and Taine will join him next year so thats it as far as extra-curricular activities.

I'd like Caleb to do swimming lessons from 3 years. Brooke did jazz ballet, swimming, athletics and gymnastics in her preschool years then music lessons and sports once she started primary school. I used to limit her to two things but I think during the preschool years one extra curricula at a time is enough. They need plenty of play time.

Both my girls started Marching at 4yrs old. Both competed and and travelled with their team. This year Mercedes is doing hoop club, tap dancing and miniball and Lesieli is doing running club, hoop club and netball. I have also been trying to get Lesieli to go back to Rock n roll as she is a very skilled dancer and got 3rd at the New Zealand champs for triples after only being at RNR for 7mths so fingers crossed she will..
I wish they could do more but I cant afford it, esp as the fees are between $80-$110each child per term and then if they are doing 2 things each it soon adds up.

Well, both mine do swimming so far, but thats fairly pricey, so will see ow long we carry that on for, maybe another few terms, then we will see. I want to start Jake dancing when he turns three, I think thats when they can go but am not too sure,a nd Charly the same. If they hate it, they can stop. When they go to school, they will do a sport and music, I think, thats plenty. Would like scouts/guides etc, but will see.

Teresa we are thinking about this sorta stuff too. Paris is realllllly into her dancing and singing etc. We have been meaning to get her into it since about age 3 but thought she was a bit young, now i fugre we should get her sorted with starting it before she starts school so it's not a whole heap of new stuff at once. We are thinking modern dance for her. I would love to know if there's anywhere here in palmy that does the singing or kids drama classes though cos i think that's where she's heading. She actually asked me tonight at the concert in the square if she could go up and hop on stage and sing with the band.

I took brooke to dancing when she was 4 as she loved to dance BUT she didn't like dancing lessons as she wanted to dance 'her' way LOL... so we canned that after a term. Now she is into heaps, she does drama, guitar lessons (she wants to be a famous singer and already write pretty good songs and combined marsial arts. and 2008 she wants to do singing lessons which I must get onto finding out about. she was going to do a modeling course but decided on singing lessons as i said she can't do both as they cost a bit (on top of her kip mcgarth)
I would ask what your girls wanted to do cause at 4-6 they pretty much have an idea. Brooke did athletics at that age and loved it and was really good at it. Its a shame she didn't keep it up but she got bored of winning (her words not mind LOL) shes not so good now unfortunately. But for the younger group its pretty fun and they learn so skills as well. Not too expensive either.

Phew! This is all getting very exciting. We have decided on ballet for Hannah, probably gymnastics for Briona next year (when she is 3 1/2 or 4). Now to get started on enrolling Hannah... somewhere... there is so much on google but most of it is for adults

Yeah we looked at the idea of pippins, one of the ladies i work with runs one of the ones in palmy,
Teresa, am unsure about ballet, cannot remember but i think she does teach it.. but i have heard good things about the McDonald school of dance.. that's where we are taking paris probably. Although, I have also heard good things about the maureen axe one too and you always see them at all the big events.

I went to school with all the McDonald girls (they are all fabulous dancers) and if I were going to send Hannah to dance I would definitely go to Amy's. She has just bought the dance school here as well (the lady that did have it is 85 now I think!) so we will probably send Han there when she is 3 or 4, if she starts more modern classes.

Daniel is gonna do swimming lessons. DH is a crap swimmer and I love the water so I don't want another crap swimmer lol..
I'd love it if he liked horse riding too, my parents got me a pony when I was 4 and they couldn't keep me off her so it would be awesome if he was into that especially since the PN pony club is just down the road from our place and my parents have a farm.
DH would like it if he got into music, he has a drum kit, guitar and keyboard.
The one thing with us though is that we want Daniel to have interests that are out-doorsy.. we both come from farms and fresh air is good and we both had lots of things to do outside rather than being cooped up inside all the time.
