Ok, so there isn't really a course you can do extramurally on how to be a mum - other than belonging to Oh Baby, of course!

I've just sent in my application to enrol with the Open Polytechnic to complete a deploma in Information and Library Studies (Level 5). I'm so excited! I spoke to one of the tutors about it, and there shouldn't be any hassles about being accepted. Yay!

I know there are more of you mums who are studying at the moment - and not only correspondance but also internal as well.
What are you doing, and how far into it are you?

i wish i was extra mural, but sadly i am not.

Am studying nursing, have been since way before miss Paris came along - so i should have been finished by now - once i finish it will have taken me 4.5 years to finish a 3 year bachelors degree. will be worth it though. finally - I only have about 5 and a half months to go now - I think i sit my final state exam around the 17th of July this year. YAYAY boy will i be celebrating!

Currently out on placement - only 1 week left to go, and going pretty well - Ayja is sick though so starting late today, once mike gets home from work. (kids ALWAYS get sick when i am on placement) then straight into another 3 week placement at a doc's office after this, so that should be kewl.

I'm stiiiil studying - feels like it goes on forever...

I did my undergrad Bachelor of International Communication at Unitec on campus, and this year I am finishing a Grad Dip in Journalism which I am doing extramurally thru Massey.

Good on you Becca for taking the leap!

I'm just about to start doing my Grad diploma in secondary teaching, although being out and about during the school holidays and seeing these "people" who I'll be able to teachi n a few years has made me reconsider my decision!
Have done extramural before and it is tough. I suggest trying to study for an hour a day - that way if you miss a day or so, it doesn't matter too much!

I did two papers towards this diploma a year ago, but put my studies on hold when I found out I was pregnant with Josiah... preggy brain and studies don't mix!

At the time, I jumped in over my head and enrolled in a double degree (it was only 2 more papers than the single degree). I've since realised that was stupid of me so now I'm going for the single degree in stages: Diploma (level 5) Information and Library Studies, then Diploma (level 6) Information and Library Studies, then the BA. With the 2 papers I've already done I should finish the level 5 dip at the end of the year.

I am an extramural-mummy too (slash internal student also)!! Only just tho! I am going back to uni on the 27th after a year off!! I tried going back to uni when Quinn was about four months old but found it tricky organising someone to look after him while I was at class. Both my mum and Andy were working odd hours so it almost worked but was far too stressful.

I am going back now to finish my degree! Yay! I am really excited to be doing something for me rather than just being mummy. Quinn is all booked into daycare! We have been once for a settling in session - there were a couple of tears (all mine, none from him the little rotter!!) I am really nervous of leaving him, as I have never done it for more than a few hours and always with either Andy or my mum but on the other hand am SO looking forward to some time away from him!!

I have one year left and then I will be AnnaD, BBS. Majoring in HR training and development. It'll be good to have finished but I am almost positive that I am not destined for the corporate world, before baby yes but now my priorities have changed. I am thinking I will do teaching... Still no definites tho!!

Good luck to all other studying mums!! Nice to know I am not the only one!!

As most of you know, I am studying internally at Vic - none of that extramural stuff for me

I have just finished a BA majoring in Political Science and Religious Studies (pretty much an Islamic Studies degree) and am heading into my honours year (taken part-time over two years) on the 27th of Feb. Very excited to be able to put my brain back into action after four months of deterioration.

So eventually will have a BA Hons in International Relations and would like to do my MA in something (?) afterwards. Though I am sick of being on the benefit so would like to get a job where my bosses will pay for study while working

yeah that's what i'm thinking Nikki - maybe in a few years i might become a plunket nurse or something - i think it's 1 year training but it's on the job.   then plan to studying midwifery when paris and ayja are about 10 and 8 yrs old, so once i finish they'll be pretty ok to get themselves organised if i have to go somewhere in the middle of the night and leave them with Mike.. lolol

Heaps of nurses go off pretty quickly to do their Masters.... dunno if i'm into that - maybe when i have more time and less children lolol.

Anna - Quinn will be fine! Maya loves daycare, she has so much fun there. And time out for you is soooo important. I know what you mean about the whole corporate thing - I don't know that it was ever really me, but since havng Maya it's SO definitely not! I love working from home - I don't even own a suit, and it means I can take my lunchbreak at 12pm and watch Dr Phil and fold washing while I have my sandwich. I couldn't do that in an office...

I'm doing a paper through the Bible College of New Zealand but I must admit I've been slack and barely looked at it!! (darn work at own pace papers!!!).

I'm going to need to pull finger! It's going to count towards a Diploma in Biblical Studies...eventually...this is my first paper.

Janine - I was actually at my plunket appointment the other day (minus the plunket nurse damn her... but that's another story) and I thought of you and actually planned out your career as a Plunket Nurse. Was very embarrassed so decided not to mention it, but now have decided I can deal with the embarrassment. You'd be a great Plunket Nurse!!! And you could recruit for OhBaby! (Only the cool mums though )

I also am studying this year but it is only part-time towards by bachelor of teaching. I live on campus so only a 5min walk to classes, one of our friends is going to mind Xanda while i have class, which is only 4hrs a wk. But will have to look at putting Xanda in daycare when it comes time for my practicum, which i not looking forward to as he is still really young.

can understand you there Fairsk8... am on practicum all the time - have been for last 3 weeks, will be for the next 3 weeks too. you both learn to adjust. the way i have found i get through it is that i have a clearfile that i usually stick all my paperwork in that i do in my 'downtime' in between doing things for patients.. anyway in there i always have one page devoted to photos of my girls - that way when i am doing paperwork i quickly flick over and see my girls whenever i want.   I also now have a necklace that my mother in law got me for xmas with a pic of my girls laser-etched into... so i wear that... that way my girls are always 'with me' no matter how far away i am.

Both mike and i have one - my in-laws go to aussie pretty often, which is where they got them, so i think each time they go back now i might get an updated one.... a kewl thing to have i think.

Thats a cool idea about the photos Janine. Am looking at deferring my practicum to the end of the year instead of August, then he will be a little bit older.

Well, I've started! The official start of semester 1 was yesterday, although my course materials have been available online for me since last week...

I wrote up all my due dates on a wall planner... I've got an assessment due on both of my kids birthdays! And nothing due inbetween! Extra incentive to get them done, I guess
