Topic: Tests & symptoms Posted: 10 January 2008 at 3:53pm |
Question: If you have early pregnancy symptoms, wouldn't that mean your HCG levels must be high enough to show up on an early response test? Surely for HCG to be high enough to be causing symptoms it would be high enough to be detected by a test???

I know my BFP showed up about 11DPO - and I only tested then because my boobs were behaving strangely!

fiona.....well yes in theory but i've had 'symptoms ' when i wasnt even pregnant..:) but yeah the hormone levels would in theory be high enough to be picked up on a test.. i had a positive (8dpo) before i had symptoms though

Yeah that is what I figured. I've had symptoms for a week which must be early PMS but as that NEVER happens to me I thought it might be pregnancy but it's clearly not.

I don't know. As we're not trying, I haven't paid any attention to the length of my cycles. I might be due in 4 days or it might be 5! My periods have been painless and problem free (only had 5 so far as they didn't come back until Elle was 12mths) so I haven't paid any attention. We're not trying but would be delighted if we were pregnant. The whole TTC thing scares me as we did it for 24 months to get Elle so it would be a dream come true to get pregnant easily this time.
I think I ovulated somewhere around the 30th Dec tto the 2nd Jan so depends how long my cycles are

Not always. Sometimes your HCG isn't always that high when you first get pregnant. I had a test done 3 days before I did a test and the first test done at the hospital (i collasped at work and they thought I was pregnant - little did they actually know) was a BFN and then 3 days later I did a test and hello BFP.

You can always use an early response pg test - I used one before af was due and got my bfp. You can use them as early as 4 days before af is due I think. Good luck

I used an early response test today and it was negative. If these symptoms were pregnancy I'm sure it would mean the HCG was high enough to show so I must just be having a funny month!

Not neccessarily! I woke up about a week before AF was due and suddenly had this random revelation that my boobs were giant and that I was pregnant. I tried to put it out of my mind but the boobs got bigger and I started feeling bloated so when AF was a no show I tested. I pretty much knew by then, have been preg enough times! But I tested at 14dpo and only got a faint line, then had hCG drawn at 15dpo and it was only at 137 so if I had tested way back when my boobs blew up I would have got a BFN.
There are lots of other hormones in play with pregnancy (progesterone, prolactin etc.) and the HPT only picks up hCG so it could be the other hormones causing the symptoms. I still have my fingers crossed for you!

Symptoms could be PMS but it'd be the first time I've had them this far out from my period. Symptom started on Sunday (about 7 days post suspected ovulation) and includ dragging sensation in pelvis and lower back, dizziness (got this 1 week before BFP with Elle but could be heat!), sudden sharp pulling sensation from time to time in the region of the round ligaments when I move suddently, skin has gone NUTS...like teenage days, breasts a little tender which used to happen all the time but hasn't since I had Elle. The funny thing is, I hadn't even thought of TTC or timing but suddenly felt pregnant! Probably just the subconcious mind playing tricks with me I think!

I took me until the day AF was due to get a BFP this time and my hcg levels were SOOOO high, we thought maybe it was twins as it was so high(had to have blood tests as had early bleeding), but it took me 6 tests over a few days to finally get bfp on a digital (the day AF was due.) I had gotten some super duper faint lines on a few tests and then some bfn on others, it was so confusing. Plus I didnt even feel pregnant, boobs wernt sore or anything, I was just slightly more tired.
So..my levels were really high, but still didnt give me an early reasult. If they were super high at 6 weeks they must have been high when I tested aswell. I think everyone is different, so dont give up hope, its never over until AF shows up.
