    Posted: 16 January 2008 at 7:08am
I'm still mid-way through the first trimester, and while I haven't had extreme morning sickness (just general nausea is all) I am finding it really hard to eat a balanced diet because:

- I have gone off most meat
- Dairy seems to make me feel queasy
- My food seems to take soooooo long to digest
- I can only really appreciate raw veggies, not cooked.

All these things I can force myself to eat, but it is not pleasant. I am taking prenatal vitamins but they don't give you protein and the calcium supplement is minimal (only 23% RDA for preggos)

I DO seem to enjoy and crave:

- fresh fruit and raw veggies
- juice
- breads

Any tips for eating more balanced when food is unappealing? Does anyone have any weird food cravings/aversions that they never expected while pregnant? I'd be interested to hear.

I was exactly the same. I just ate what I could until 12 weeks then got stricter on myself and forced down veg. I was a HUGE veg fan before pregnancy but since being pregnant with Elle I'm still not that keen. I'm fine with salads again but even they were a struggle during pregnancy.

It's funny as I keep reading that the body is supposed to crave healthy food and go off things like coffee but that never happens for me.

I have a very healthy diet anyway so I kinda just force myself.

I too ate lots of bread, rice & fruit juice in the first trimester as it helped with the all day nausea I had (like you, no vomitting).

Interestingly, I never usually put on weight and am slightly below the healthy weight range with a BMI of about 18.5 and I found I put quite a bit of weight on in the first trimester (about 12kgs in the first 5 months) but it was just what my body wanted to do. I didn't put much on in the last trimester and I lost it ALL, every single Kg + a couple more within 3 weeks of having Elle so it was all just fine.

I MADE myself eat green veg as everyone kept saying that what you eat affects what your kid eats when they are older. The funny thing is I went off them during pregnancy and Elle will not eat them! Even though I forced them down! Maybe she was destined to dislike green things regardless of what I did. I also couldn't bear perfume during prenancy and Elle get's really upset by perfume now too. Funny.

This is really interesting about what kids will eat when they're older. I am guessing, though, that family eating habits while the kids are small will have a greater influence on their likes and dislikes than what you eat in pregancy. When my brother and I had stopped breastfeeding but couldn't have solid foods yet, Mum didn't give us any really sweet foods like fruity baby foods ... she made a lot of her own baby food by putting cooked foods like silver beet through the mouli ... and we have both really loved all veggies all our lives.

It is interesting as I introduced veg before fruit and we eat very healithy here. Homemade food everynight for us and for Elle most of the time but she still won't eat veg without a lot of effort. So it must be more than maternal diet and family eating habits. Elle's just had issues with food full stop...texture, taste, temperature so maybe she is just sensitive in that regard??

Can't stand peas since I got pregnant, the smell, seeing them being eaten on tv even walking past a big display in the freezer section when on special at the supermarket!!! Bluuurrrrgggghhh

I'm a bit similar to you mountaingoat, not so keen on the cooked veg (never had a prob before and will still eat it just definately not my fav) but love raw veg - was hanging out for the salad season to start! Anything fresh is great!!

I just made pumpkin chocolate chip loaf ... now my baby is either going to grow up with an aversion to chocolate and sweet food, or else become a chocoholic him/herself!!!

Tiff - that is so interesting about peas! 'cos I've always considered them such a neutral food.

U could eat breads that have sunflower seeds etc. in them to get more protein, and buy calcium fortified juice if u are worried!

Early on all I could keep down was toast and potatoes... fruit, veg, dairy and water would all just come up again straight away. So I just had pregnancy vitamins and ate the toast and potatoes... but at about 6 months I was able to start eating everything again, and now I can't get enough fruit/veg and yoghurt and milk! Oh and salmon, lol.

Just eat what you can... the baby will be getting everything it needs from your body anyway, so if you are lacking in any vitamins it will be your body that suffers rather than the babies. If you are taking your folic acid and getting enough food u will be fine... especially if you are eating lots of fruit and veg

I was the same as Busymum I was crazy about salt. I was putting salt onto everything even the things that had already had salt on them (ready salted chips) with Josh and had cravings for cream buns with Andrew.

I ate averagely during both my pregnancies and both my boys are really good eaters.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I've been mad on salt and fresh fruit with this baby, I think the salt is coz I am a little dehydrated. So far no major aversions except rice which I'm not a big fan of anyway. Oh and eggs which is really bizarre, I can't stand the thought of eating them.

With Maya I couldn't stand the thought of mince and chicken, and found lettuce and cucmber gave me wicked heartburn. With the gremlins I went off chicken, pasta and rice but craved mince with sour cream which I couldn't eat at all with Maya funnily enough.

I wouldn't worry too much about your nutritional intake tho, I have hyperemesis so spent the first 10 or so weeks (and the first 16 with Maya, and the whole 37 with the gremlins) vomiting and pretty much only able to stomach toast and lemonade iceblocks, but baby will take the nutrients he/she needs from you, so it's you that suffers if your diet is deficient not bubs. I ended up iron deficient coz I couldn't eat meat at all in first tri.

I couldn't stand the taste of normal tap water (normally I love water and now it is all I drink)...and had to drink frizzy water through out my entire pregnany (thank goodness by parents had a soda stream maker which we borrowed). Also hated the taste of Coke- which I used to drink a lot of,  now I still can only drink a very small amount.

I was also crazy about any type of melons and had a massive craving for a grapefruit iceblock (which I couldn't find anywhere and had to end up making my my mind) and couldn't eat strawberries- due to the fact that I threw up on them a couple of times and they do not look very nice when they come up the wrong way.

I craved fruit and fruit juice while pregnant with Gina - normally I'm not big on fruit - and Gina loves all things fruity. She can always be counted to eat her fruit even if she refuses everything else

With this bubs, I have a huge craving for meat (even cold meats and salami ) and all things spicy.

No real food aversions though with either of the pregnancies.
