my sister has trouble using the telephone (has anxiety issues) so she has gotten a TTY phone .which is also the same sort of phone deaf/hard of hearing people use.

so I called her and well lets just say it was very weird..a person types your conversation and you say "go ahead" when you want them to send your reply. and the person doing the typing would say my sister's reply to me

admittedly it made me feel a little uneasy so I only "talked" for a couple of minutes we do talk most nights on msn which i find easier or actually physically talking to her on the phone.

I think the TTY phones are good for conversations if both people have them otherwise if one doesn't have it then i think it can get a bit awkward.

I didnt really feel like I was talking to my sister.kind of like being in a dark room and you can hear the person but not see them.

Hrmmmm... all I can say is that if her anxiety issues are bad enough to warrant getting a phone like that then I hope she is dealing with the underlying causes too!!

And to add to that I hope she is getting some help as that is extreme anxiety and definitely isnt normasl to that degree to need or want a phone like that!

They are weird eh? My dad, who is deaf used to use one before he got his cochlear implant and I really hated talking to him on it. Its not very comfortable having that 3rd party (the typist) there as well!

oh glad im not the only one...she sent me an email asking me for my number and the latest I can call her this is what I said in the email hope I didnt sound too harsh.

"dont take this the wrong way but only call me if you are actually going to talk to me..I realise you have issues with using the phone but I am your sister and it was little uneasy for me having to actually talk to someone else I didnt feel like I was actually talking to you so yeah I have no problems with you calling me but only if you are physically going to talk to me :)

funny my sister emailed me and said "what if someone you knew was deaf and had a tty phone but didnt have the internet would you never phone them"

well first of all it is likely if i knew a deaf person who didnt have the internet they would live in the same town as me and I would most likely go and visit them personally.

Im just not comfortable having to talk to a 3rd party (the typist) I feel I cant relax and just have a easy going conversation.

but i do think things like msn is much easier least it is relatively private :)
