I am a bit stumped as to what teat size Lauren should be on. She is 3 months and 1 week old and has a bottle of EBM once a day to get the bonding with Daddy and it gives me a well earned break

I currently have her on Avent number 1 teats, but they seem too slow, she sucks and sucks and it takes ages for her to finish the bottle, in fact she just gives up and I have to top her up on the boob as she is a very efficient sucker on the boob.

So tonight we try number 2 teat size, and she gags and chokes and coughs and splutters so we resort back to teat nubmer 1 size.

So question is, what on earth teat size should she be on? Neither seem to be working for us

My wee man is 8 weeks and on the number 2 but I am pretty sure that at 3 months it moves up to the number 3 and then from 6 months its the number 4.

It may take her a couple of days to get use to the next size up.

hey peachy, we started Luke on the number 2 teats, but this was when he was about 8 weeks anyway. He doesn't have a problem with them.

Peachy - we have just moved Ollie onto #3 teats, but they are a bit fast and he has to remember not to gulp the bottle down too quickly! But he is drinking a better amount now - I think he was getting worn out on the #2 teats!

The ages on the teats are a guide only, Fay is still on No 3 teats and she manages fine.
Lauren will get used to the faster flow and make her adjustments soon. We went to speech therapy when Fay was 8 weeks old for general latching problems and talked about teats as she leaked out of the side of her mouth and were told they generally do that if the teats are too dfast or too slow

We didn't move to no #2 until Gina was about 5 months old I think (from memory) but we use the Tommee Tippee bottles not Avent. We didn't last on no #2 long either as Gina was teething and refusing to drink so my GP recommended we move to #3 to make drinking easier for her. We did that at around 6-7 months I think.
I'd say if she gags and chokes and splutters, then it may be a little early. Could also be that she's bf the rest of the time so used to that 'flow' better. Maybe stay on #1 for another few days, then try again

To answer my own question

Variable - one slot
With a slot instead of holes.
Recommended for babies 3 months and older.
By turning the bottle and aligning the position marker at the side of the teat with the baby's nose you can vary the flow to suit your baby's needs, generally faster at the beginning and slower towards the end (align marker l for slow flow, ll for medium and lll for fast flow).

Sorry to hijack, but if Jackson's spilling a lot when he's being fed, does it mean the teat is too fast or slow or something? When he had EBM he wasn't too bad, but on formula its worse, so maybe its just cos he's on formula?

This is what the avent website said

By turning the bottle and aligning the position marker at the side of the teat with the baby's nose you can vary the flow to suit your baby's needs, generally faster at the beginning and slower towards the end (align marker l for slow flow, ll for medium and lll for fast flow).

Peachy - Elle is still on the 2 (sometimes 3) teats, she just doesn't like the 3 at all and I try and sneak them in constantly but she will start to splutter a bit on it. She still is drinking her bottles happily though so I am not worried at all, I think someone else said - they are just a guide line, so I will just keep trying to move her up, but not really worried about it.

Well tonight Lauren took the number 2 teat no worries, in fact it seemed too slow....who knows, trial and error I guess....why don't babies come with a manual, would be so much easier
