HI ALL,MY HUSBAND AND I JUST HAD OUR 13 WEEK SCAN LAST WEEK AND WERE TOLD WE HAD A 1:85 RISK OF DOWNS, THEN WE DECIDED TO GET A SECOND OPINION SO WE WENT TO ANOTHER PERSON AND THEY TOLD US 1:1200 WE THEN WENT BACK TO THE FIRST PERSON AND THEY TOLD US THAT THE SECOND PERSON WAS MEASURING INCORRECTLY AND THAT YOU SOULD ALWAYS GO WITH THE WORST READING, SO NOW MY EMOTIONS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE AND I HAVE BOOKED AN AMNIO FOR NEXT WEEK BUT IM SO SCARED, WHAT IF THE BABY IS PERFECTLY FINE AND SOMETHING GOES WRONG? IM 30 YEARS OLD SO WHY IS OUR RISK FACTOR SO HIGH? WE ARE A HEALTHY COUPLE WITH NO HISTORY OR DOWNS OR ANYTHING, ANYWAY HAS ANYONE HAD ONE? OR CAN ANYONE OFFER ADVICE OR SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS MATTER, DESPERATLY NEED TO KNOW THAT IM DOING THE RIGHT THING, ALTHOUGH ONLY WE CAN DECIDE THAT BUT ADVICE ALWAYS HELPS!!
THANKS

Hi dtmum. They get that number from a few factors. You automatically become a higher risk being over 30.
Did they tell you what the Nuchal measurement is? We got told that pretty much if it is 3mm or under you are a low risk, but because of my age we ended up with a 1:685 chance anyway. We were offered the chance to do an amnio but decided against any further tests as Sam's Nuchal measurement was only 2.2mm and as it turns out she is just fine.

Edited to add: Hard to do, but try not to worry too much. I'm sure it will all be fine

I agree with mum2sam, try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know).
See if you can find out the Nuchal measurement as this is the starting point for their findings (+ age etc). It might be worth finding out the measurement from both scans if possible to see what the difference was.

Amnio on the other hand is very successful procedure nowadays and by having the test doesnt automatically result in a poor outcome.

Take care
Gill

Although 1:85 sounds high it actaully isn't that high statically I would think. Especially because of the way that they measure the risk factor.
The 1:85 is only a measurement of the likelihood of you fitting into another measurement ratio band which they measure with the amnio.
I think they stress far too many expected mums out with these ratio tests.
Try not to stress to much while you wait for your amnio.

Hi Dtmum, When I was 28years old and pregnant with our second child. My husband and I are a healthy couple and we had no history of downsyndrome in the family. Nothing was picked up on with the Nuchal fold test but there was other signs at the 18-20 weeks scan.
I had an amnio but it wasn't until 30 weeks. And it was more to confirm that our DS had downsyndrome - so we had some time to come to terms with the shock and learn a little about downsyndrome before he was born.

We are now having number baby 3 and we decided to decline a amnio this time because it wouldn't change our mind anyway. And although the risk is small to miscarriage we didnt want to chance it. We had been had been trying for nearly two years before falling pregnant again.

So what I'm trying to say is... while it was good to know before DS birth that he had down syndrome - that unless you are willing to terminate it doesnt change the outcome. I don't know what we would have done if we had of known sooner but i am so pleased we didnt have to make that decision. We have a great little boy who is the apple of our eye and I couldn't imagine life without him.

Everyone is different and I don't think one decision is right or wrong but just what works for that couple.

I just wanted to add also that you have to get the scan within a specified few days otherwise the results aren't accurate anyway. This is obviously based on your LMP dates or first scan dates. If you ovulated a little earlier or later then the Nuchal scan isn't going to be accurate at all.
We went for our scan in what should have been 13w4d but Sam was actually measuring 14+ weeks. The radiologist said blah, blah, high risk etc etc, but my m/w said that if Sam didn't fit into the exact size brackets that the measurement was basically meaningless. This is apparently quite common.

Even though you have had one high risk result, there is still a big chance that your baby is fine.   I had an amnio done 4 weeks ago as the risk from my NT scan was 1:49 (I'm 38 and nuchal fold was 2.6). The amnio results came back all clear. I'm not sure what we would have done if the results were positive, but i'm the type of person who needed to know or I would have worried myself sick if I didn't know for sure.   Also I found the waiting for the amnio was a lot worse than the procedure itself. All the best.

Hi, have just read your post and went thru a similar experience. Our first scan showed a nuchal msmt of 2.1mm and we ended up high risk of 1 in 115 since I am 34 (read 108). Anyway, I completely dialled out about the whole thing as the scan report reccommended an amnio. we went to the Fetal Medicine Clinic at CHCH womens for a chat and ended up ahving a CVS - a sample of the placenta taken at 13 weeks. After 2 torturous weeks we got the all clear for whatever they looked for - Downs etc. No chromosomal abnormalities detected - result!!!! I am sure you will be the same - take heart. Its a bloody awful time and I know EXACTLY how you feel, but you have a MUCH MUCH MUCH greater chance of all being good than not. Where do you live? If its near chch Dr Rosemary Reid is fantastic. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Hi just joined, I went through amnio last at Christmas. We were given a 1:7 chance so very scary. We also ended up having two amnios as the first didn't produce enough fluid for results. I ended up with stress headaches for a whole week before I got the results which were thankfully good. I hope all goes well with yours and you have every right to feel scared and worried.

I just posted this in the other NT scan querie. Hope it helps :o)

I am 29 and got a 1:18 chance of a downs baby. My measurements were pretty similar to yours and at first I was quite upset about it. I forgot to ask more questions when the MW first told me...so I didn't know what to compare the measurement to. The next time I saw her I did ask and she said that at 7 - 9 mm she would be concerend.
I discussed it with DH and both decided that even if it did have downs we would still keep it and love it the same so there was no point in more testing as we didn't want to be pressured into terminating if the results were positive.
Most downs babies have heart defects as well and tend to be smaller, so the 20 week scan would have picked that up and given us time to come to terms with what we were in for.
I guess it depends on what you will do with the information once you get it from more testing.
My SIL is 20 and also got a fairly high result from the NT.
I had a healthy baby boy 8 weeks ago and she had a healthy baby girl a day later. Neither of us had further testing.

Try not to worry...I did for a couple of weeks, then it slowly left my mind until I had him. If you are stressing about it, then it will be bad on the baby.

I had an amnio at Christmas. We were given a 1:7 chance. It is very scary no doubt and I hope you have a doctor as understanding as ours she really helped put us at ease. She told us of a couple who were given a 1:2 chnace and ended up with a healthy baby.
I have to say it felt like my whole life was put on hold till we got the results back - a healthy boy. I hope all goes well with yours.
