Spilly baby help

I have a 4 week old baby who is a very spilly baby (unlike my first). My problem is that at times he has trouble settling to sleep as he seems to sick up a bit and it makes him squirm about. He gets so close, eyes shutting then bam wide open with a look on his face like he has tasted something bad. He spills alot in his bassinette too. He does settle to sleep sometimes. When I pick him up to settle him again after he has got upset he usually spills some more or burps. Then I put him down again and it happens all over again.

He is a very gulpy feeder and I am having to wind him frequently during a feed ( I am BF).

Has anyone else had this problem and if so do you know any tricks to help him out. Would sleeping him in a wedge on his side help do you think?? Could it be something I am eating? I am sticking to pretty plain food at the moment as it is. Could it be reflux?? He doesn't really cry a lot and when I pick him up he stops, also he will quite happily lie on the floor on his back so I am guessing it prob isn't reflux??

Daniel had silent reflux and he did all of those things minus the actual spill, he swallowed it all back down rather than bringing it back up.

I'd go to your GP and explain all these things to them and they may give you infant gaviscon to try out if they feel it might be reflux.

The crying over spilt milk website is fantastic if you are wondering about reflux.

What helped us though was meds and we always slept Daniel in a sleep wedge, he was far more comfy on his side than on his back and I was completely comfy with our choice to side sleep him. We also burped him more often during feeds and after a feed kept him upright for as long as possible afterwards to let the milk settle.

I've noticed that since I've been holding Jack upright for a wee while after a feed (which is hard in the night when you're so tired) he doesn't squirm as much. Could be worth a go? I know that I have to burp my bubs for about 7-8 mins even though they say you only need to for 5, so maybe try burping for longer/in different positions? Otherwise I would go to the doc too and get some meds to help.

Everyone has suggested what I would suggest!

Sorry to butt in Lottiesmum but when using Infacol do you have to give it to them before feeding (like the instructions say) or is it okay afterwards when you see them having trouble bringing up wind?

Jess, is that up their left side or ours?

Once they've burped, is that enough? or should you keep going for at least 10 min?

I just found this thread and as I have a spilly baby have found it very helpful...

Aussiegirl, my Harry was really spilly and after months of just putting up with it (and he didn't seem in pain) we got him put on Gaviscon (at Plunket's recommendation) and it helped lots. He was the same with spilling in his sleep.

Thanks arohuani...I will ask the plunket nurse or midwives at family centre and see what they recommend!

ETA: is Gaviscon a prescription medicine, or over the counter?

I spoke to the pharmacist at the chemist and said the plunket nurse had recommended trying it. I had to pay for it, something like $15. When I got it on prescription it was free. Just got one to try first to see if it made a difference.

And yeah Harry hated the taste with a passion at first, but then grew to love it. I don't know how cos ick it tastes gross.

Just take note of how often he spills, and if it's only straight after a feed or all the time. So that you can tell the doc about how many spills he's having, and how much each time. With Harry it was an average amount but sooo often.
