Topic: Travelling while pregnant Posted: 17 February 2008 at 7:37pm |
DH and I have been talking about going over to Australia for about 3 months this year travelling. We would probably go during my 2nd trimester and I was wondering if anyone else has done this and what kind of antenatal care I would qualify for over there (and if it would be free etc?)

I spent two months in Oz when I was preg with the gremlins and a month this time round over Xmas. You wouldn't qualify for any free maternity care, I have Medicare which covered my emergency treatment in hospital (I was there when I had my m/c and d and c, and again when I had bleeding with this bub) but I had to pay $180 for my NT scan with this bub, and $260 for a growth scan with the gremlins coz I was away at the times those scans needed to be done.

Yeah, Emma is right. There is no free care at all for New Zealanders, unless you have MediCare, and to get that you have to prove that you have permanently settled.
I would get comprehensive travel insurance for emergencies, but be prepared to pay for doctor's visits and any other ongoing care you require.
I am travelling to Fiji for a week at 24 weeks. I hope I am ok! It's to be a super-lazy holiday.

Check the very fine print of your travel cover to ensure Pregnancy isnt considered a Pre Existing Condition or something similar if you rely on Travel Insurance :)

I think if you have an uneventful pregnancy you'd be OK. However if you require extra care, it may cost you dearly so better check travel insurance will cover you. When in the 2nd trimester do you plan to travel? If say you leave in the 5th month for 3 months you may also need to deliver there so check that too.

we're thinking of going between 4 1/2 - 7 1/2 months if we do - I've told DH I don't want to risk it any later. If we don't go now, we may go when baby arrives. Thanks for the replies so far!

Is this generally the same if you get pregnant whilst overseas? We're considering starting TTC whilst on an overseas trip next year - I could be up to 3 months pregnant before we came home. If I wasn't pregnant when I took out travel insurance, would it be a pre-existing condition?
Sorry to threadjack emachan!

Re: Travel Insurance - with "most", a normal pregnancy isn't a pre-existing condition, at least not until you're in your third trimester (at which point some policies make a cut-off). I believe some will exclude difficult / high risk pregnancies however.
I travelled to the USA for 3 weeks in my second trimester, and other than the plane flight which was terribly uncomfortable, I had no issues. I told my MW before I was going, and had to take Cartia to help prevent DVT on the plane, but all was well and I didn't have any medical appointments over there. Granted, it'd probably be different if it was for a significantly longer period of time.

That's true except for hospital treatment. If you had to go to an emergency room you'd be covered by a trans-tasman agreement, and likewise if you were admitted to hospital.
Otherwise there's no free treatment for kiwis without medicare here
