    Posted: 04 March 2006 at 11:07am
I have conflicting information about wool singlets. My mum use to put our wool singlets under our body suits, but the plunket nurse the other day growled at me and said that the singlet should be overtop of the bodysuit. I was thinking tho, wouldn't that defeat the purpose, because woolen singlets are suppose to keep babies warm and that is best achieved close to your skin. So I was just wondering what everybody else thinks.

I think some babies have sensitive skin that the wool can irritate. mine were always fine.   that said, some plunket nurses can be a little more "opinionated" than others. My friend and I have son's pretty much the same age. they both have a bottle at bedtime, and when they get up, as well as milk during the day. they both weigh about the same and have the sameish food during the day. My plunket nurse sdai that much milk was fine. Hers told her she needed to cut out a bottle sometime. So, do whatever you think is best!

Yeah everyone has their own opinions and it can get quite confusing. I felt really bad after been told off by the plunket nurse, she made me feel horrible, it was just the way she spoke to me, I just about wanted to cry cos she made me feel like a bad mum.

don't let it get you down, i had a plunket nurse on my 2nd visit with paris, who growled me because paris was nearly below the bottom line on the growth charts for weight. she looked at me and said "i don't want to see this little girl get any further below this line" and it wasn't in a nice way she said it. i felt horrible cos i'd been having so many probs with feeding anyway, and she made me feel like i didn't give a damn. luckily wasn't my usual one, just a fill in one. - however that same plunket nurse, also told another mum in my mothers group that her baby was "far too fat and needed to go on a diet!" this baby was about 2 months old at the time.    I now know that no matter how much i feed my girls - they grow slowly and steadily and will never tip the scales.. i wish i had been more knowledgeable and confident back then. i would have told that lady to go jump! It can be hard when someone you trust and rely on to help you makes you feel like a bad stupid mum. trust me... you AREN'T!!!

we stick the girl's short sleeved cotton singlets under the woolen singlets, then their bodysuits/long sleeve tops obver the top of that...only cos that's the way i've always seen it done, and i was told it might irritate their skin - but hey - their shoulders have it straight on it and have never had probs. - go with what you think is right.

I never even thought about wool being a problem lol. Maya never had wool singlets as a baby but when we went to London when she was 18mths old I swore by them as it was so cold. She too has sensitive skin, but didn't have any probs.

Thank you Janine. I am just going to do what my mum did with me and continue to put them under his bodysuits. I never had problems with wool on my skin and have never had any problems with Xanda so will just continue to do what I am doing. Am changing plunket nurses anyway, hopefully the other one will be abit nicer.

wouldnt that look funny too with a wool singlet over his body suit. problem iwht plunket is that some of them are old ladies who are too set in their ways.

I love my Plunket nurse! I drive from Avondale to Orakei just to see her. I even nominated her for the Huggies Plunket award in 2004 and she won it! She rocks.

Must admit that part of the excitement about having another bubs is getting to have the same midwife that delivered Maya and to keep Tricia (the Plunket nurse) for another few years. I love them to bits!
