Currently still breastfeeding, for the past week or so I've noticed my right breast has been rather tender/painful to touch! Hurts when I lift my right arm etc etc. Now I've had Mastitis before and I'd doesn't feel like that, Lucas feeds off it fine, doesn't really hurt unless someone touches it etc etc.

Well I haven't been able to sleep all night, I feel like screaming!!! ARGH the pain is so unbearable, I can barely move! It literally feels as if someone has bashed the living daylights out of this breast! I'm wondering if the tissue is damaged because in the past Lucas has been rough with me, ie. climbing over me, leaning/hitting breast ...if I'm holding him I guess his weight would sorta be on that breast too?

I'm hoping its not something REALLY SERIOUS! I have rung my DR but she's not in till Monday and there were no spare appointments today ...man I hope I survive the weekend otherwise I'll have to spend $50 at A & E (money which I DON'T have).

Has anyone experienced this before, any suggestions as to how I can minimize the pain & what it could be?

Thanks

Thrush? I remember thrush being excruciating. Take neurofen as its an anti inflammatory and maybe go to the chemist and see what they say? I would get to A&E any way personally- just in case it is mastitis again.

If you don't think it is mastitis could it be just a blocked duct? Can you feel a lump at all? I would suggest proceeding as if it was mastitis for now, so take paracetmol in case of developing fever and try to drain that side. I found hot towels and massaging when feeding (which hurts like a mother) would help.
Could also possible be an absess I suppose, I don't know what they feel like though.

I've felt around the breast (Whilst screaming & swearing like a trooper) and its only the top half of the breast that is VERY PAINFUL ....underneath the nipple is squisy like normal ...infact I wouldn't even go so far as to say the painful area is swollen. I don't know whats going on!

Jennz I can't take neurofen as I'm allergic/asthmatic! Hmm Thrush ...I've heard you can get that with breastfeeding, would it pay to check bubs mouth/tongue? Because wouldn't he have to have it too?

Most likely although you may not be able to tell. He could be uncomfortable (or not) and he could have a white tongue (that you can't wipe off). It does sound like a blocked duct from what you have said- an abscess is just a blocked duct that has got infected and as this has been building up for a while it could well be. See what others think but I would be getting to A&E as if it is, you want to get it sorted pronto!

Bummer about the neurofen! I got the beginnings of mastitis this time and managed to avoid it by taking that and heat/massage.

It sounds like a blocked duct to me. I had them repeatedly when I was feeding Benjy.
What worked best to clear them for me was to feed him as much as possible from that side and while he was feeding I'd massage the area to try and clear it.
Then after he was finished and settled I'd get a warm flannel and an old towel and sit and massage/hand express off of it until it was empty.
I did this after every feed and eventually I'd get it all out.
It blardy hurt but it worked!

ETA If you do start getting feverish and sick I'd be straight to the doc.

I got a blocked duct in the early days and it freaking hurt! I ran a hot deep bath and lay in it and then massaged it out and did this a couple of times a day. It really helped me.

I was gonna say blocked duct too, esp with it hurting when you lift your arm as well. Caramel has the right idea with feeding/expressing as much as possible to try and get the lump out plus heat, either a hot (as hot as you can stand) facecloth or a wheatbag. I had a HeatMe pack that was brilliant when I was expressing for the gremlins as I got several blocked ducts.

If you start feeling feverish or unwell tho I'd say suck it up and hand over the $50 coz blocked ducts can progress very quickly to mastitis and the only cure for mastitis is antibiotics. And trust me it is REALLY nasty if left untreated, I ended up with 9 days in hospital on IV antibiotics plus having the blockages drained with a needle, not to mention having a fever of 40 degrees and hallucinating. Well worth getting it checked early!

You've probably thought of this already, but have you rung Healthline? They have registered nurses who are probably able to interpret your symptoms and give you some good advice. Good luck!
