    Posted: 07 March 2008 at 3:19pm
The other morning when I went into the lounge I found my cat had soiled on the carpet. I immediately cleaned up using rug doctor carpet cleaner and odour remover (just the detergent, not the machine) but I now have a large discoloured patch on my carpet. We thought it may just need a chance to dry but we left it and it didn’t get any better.

We then tried soap powder and a tiny dash of bleach (it’s pale brown carpet so we can’t use much) it didn’t work so I tried sard wonder soap which also didn’t work.

So we still have a large discoloured patch on the carpet and yesterday we got a letter from our letting agent to say they’re popping around this week for a property inspection – impeccable timing!

Help!!! I need to get rid of the stain asap but don’t want to buy heaps of different products as I don’t have time to figure out what’s going to work and what isn’t.

Ah, but it gets you past the property inspection date before you need to start trying things!

Ok I would use a little dishwashing liquid and then lots of water to rinse all the other crap out of the carpet and then try just good old vinegar or baking soda. The other thing to try would be cavalier brentworth (sp?) carpet cleaner which won the consumer awards as being the best.

We got carpets cleaned at a rental place and the guy that came to do them said the more crap people use to try to clean it themselves the harder it is for them to get the stain out, just something to bear in mind if you want to get professionals in, they normally cost about $60 for a large room.

OK. So I got rid of the smell and it started looking better but then the stain actually got bigger and worse

I think that I have wet the carpet too much with all my cleaning solutions and the underlay has become wet too and the dye from that run into the carpet (this is an educated guess as I read on a carpet cleaners website that this may happen - read it too late though

So I was going to get a rug (even went to the warehouse and found a few nice ones all under $20, which I might still buy) but then I decided that honesty is the best policy and I should really practice what I preach so I rang the letting agent and left her message to let her know about the stain (then I spent the $60 I was going to spend on a rug on clothes for Michaela - much cuter than a silly rug).

So now I'm just waiting to hear from her, the inspection was this morning so she would have called me by now if she's unhappy - surely.

They may not think it was as bad as you think it is (was that even english that I just wrote). If you are good tenants and have been honest about it the landlord may not be too concerned, afterall accidents happen and carpets don't last forever.

This carpet is actually pretty old and deteriorating in places so maybe they'll just replace it **fingers crossed**

I just got an email from the letting agent. She was fine about the carpet and recommended a cleaning company - phew!! She's also going to talk to the landlord about the frayed parts.

Otherwise she was happy with our house (and so she should be, we're not dirty people and yet DH and I spent most of our spare time - yeah I know, what's that - cleaning/gardening etc so by this morning the house was pratically sparkling)

Great news. Because the carpet was deteriorating badly in places the landlord has decided to replace it completely.

Bad news is now we're going to have to be extra careful about food/drink/crayons/cat etc in our lounge.

Aren't new carpets coated with something that repels stains and makes them easier to clean?

Scotchguard! You can request that your landlord gets the carpet treated as well - which they probably will anyway :D My old ones did.
