    Posted: 04 April 2008 at 11:31am
Hi I am just wondering when people went on their Maternity leave or are planning to I am only 5 months gone but plan to stay at work as long as is physically possible as I sit behind a desk all day and do no stessful or physical work so feel as long as I feel fine I should be able to be here untill the day I go into labour (or as near to!!)

But talking to my boss yesterday who are generally brilliant and I am not sure on quite how to take it she was like "you will be feeling uncomfortable in July so should finish somewhere around there" but my problem is what if I dont have it untill the end of August I will of had a month off when I didnt want to.

Sorry to rant but just wondering on how other people feel on the situation or what choices they made

Thanks Stacey

With my first pregnancy I finished work at 34 weeks and that was really good timing for me as I had a pretty sore back. I also had a desk job and to be honest sitting down for long periods of time irritated my back so I was pleased to be finishing at that stage. With my second pregnancy I'm not working so that is a bonus for me.

I'm going to try to work as long as I can, will finish a few days before my due date if I still haven't had little bubs

I've felt really good so far and I am hoping that this continues (cross my fingers and my toes)

I finished work at 33 weeks and I was really struggling by then with pain from sitting and I was at a desk job. I wanted to finish at 34 weeks but I had really had enough by 33. It was lovely to have time by myself before Daniel arrived and let me get tons of stuff done around the house plus I was able to relax alot

I got told by my MW not to stay any longer than 36 weeks at work as I'd be way too tired after that. But my work wanted me to stay longer. I compromised and stayed until 37 weeks and it was the hardest work week of my life. I had a great pregnancy up until then and that was the only week my BP went up too.

I was so so tired I managed to fall asleep at my desk on a kneeling chair.

And as it turned out I ended up having her at 38 weeks anyway.

I know it's tempting to stay at work rather than eat up maternity leave at home. But you will actually probably want to be home. Remember you're not going to get much rest once the baby is here.

I was due on wed 12/04 and finished work on fri 07/04. I was supposed to work a full day but ended up leaving work at midday - 8 hours before I gave birth.

If I had a chance to go back I wouldn't hesitate to do it exactly the same however next time, as I already have Michaela, I'll finish a few weeks before so we can have some good quality one on one time before the new baby comes (the fictional new baby that isn't even concieved yet).

I'm finishing at 36 weeks, but have reduced my hours from week 27 - I now take Wednesdays off (using my annual leave) to catch my breath and sleep! My theory is that will help me 'get through' to 36 weeks. I have a pretty supportive boss and will reduce my hours more in the last wee while if I need to.

I'm pretty sure that by law, you are entitled to 10 days leave without pay (which stinks) for anything related to your pregnancy, so if you became absilutely shattered and needed to stop, you could finish earlier than planned and take LWOP.

It's completely your call and not your boss's, so think about what you want and go from there. In my work place, you do not have to advise them of the plan till 3 months before your due date (can't remember if that is law or my work's policy) so you have some more time to make your decision.

I was suppose to work until the 7/12 and was due omn the 10/12. I had a wicked preg with no probs etc but then got PET so eneded up being admitted to hosp on the 29/11 and was induced on the 30/11.

It made it so messy with work etc. i was just tryingt o be staunch really and if I had my time again would finish at 37 or def 38 weeks, just to have some time out on my own at home getting organised etc.

See how you go......I say!

With my first..long time ago..I worked up until I was 37 weeks and was to have 3 weeks rest...however I finished on the Friday and had her on the Tuesday...

With Blake I intended working right up the same but unfortunately he came 5 weeks early too...I was at work when my waters broke....

Both my pregnancies were good and felt realatively fine so you just never can tell or know!

for my first pregnancy i was working managing a restaurant...so was on my feet for HOURS!! so went down to part time at 30 weeks, and did a lot more admin and worked right up until my due date which i found great because i had enough time to get the house ready (go the uncontrolable nesting!!) and had work to focus on and keep me sane...ish! (i started my maternity leave from my due date)
this time round i am a stay at home mum and running around after a 12 month old is work enough for me!! and the thought of having a month off sounds like bliss!!

maybe just see how you go because everyone feels differently leading up to when bubs arrives, not only can it be physically challenging! i found it quite emotionally draining as well!!

I argued with mine and told her i really needed to work as long as poss, and she said we'd take it one day at a time. ive managed two days sick leave in the whole 9 months. despite being quite sore.

I'm really lucky, my employer allows me to take time whenever I want. Havent's needed any sickleave for maternity related problems. Had the flu a while ago but only took 1 day

Everyone has been really cool with me being pregnant, it is awesome!!

I felt that it was a bit of crystal ball gazing! I finished at 37 1/2 weeks which I thought was fine as Jack was supposed to be a week late - everyone is in my family. Jack arrived at 38wks 6 days, so I didn't end up having much time off, especially as my first 3 days of maternity leave were mostly spent training my replacement!
I would leave it as long as your boss allows to make the decision. You may feel fine, or in another month or so you may become really tired and need to finish early.

I worked in retail and stayed until I was 37 weeks.
By 35 weeks I was really struggling with being on my feet all day. I tried to sit as much as possible, but when you work in a very busy retail store it was hard.

I enjoyed my three weeks at home though. It was the perfect amount of time before getting too bored. Managed to read a tonne of books (I've read one and a half books since giving birth!) and get plenty of rest.

But everyone's different. As long as your employers are flexible enough to let you finish a little sooner then you'll be fine

I finished up at 37 weeks (it coincided with Christmas) ... however I went 2 weeks overdue so it was a long wait!

In saying that I was "over it" by 35ish weeks ... so the last couple were bloody hard (and I could come and go from my job as I pleased).

I had no choice as I was studying so finished up at 33 weeks, but continued to work my part-time job until 39 weeks (it was Christmas) and then returned when Jack was 4 weeks old. You may find that even though you're not in a physical job, you still get really tired! And you never know how the last few weeks of pg will go - mine was a shocker with heaps of appts etc and constant monitoring so you never know. If you've got good employers, just keep in constant dialogue with them about it all.
