Hi there everyone,
Just a question - has anyone travelled before whilst pregnant? My husband and I have booked a trip to Phuket, Thailand in May (I will be over 4 months pregnant then). Has anyone experienced any problems with travelling before i.e been sick or anything??

I travelled to AUstralia for 2 weeks when I was 7 week pregnant (not far i know but...) and I found the heat was wicked for my morning sickness, it made it waaayyyy worse. But If you are travelling at over 4 months there is a good chance you will be out of the morning sickness range - i am sure you will be fine...?

Ive just been to aussie for a couple of weeks and was fine. If its hot just make sure you drink heaps of water. I didnt feel sick or anything but the plane was a bit uncomfortable because baby felt like she was on my bladder and I had to go to the toilet every two seconds which is not fun on the plane.

I flew at four months to phuket (oops - didn't klnow!!). Actually we went in June. And I've flown at eight months. No problems both times but some airlines do request notes from your doctor. at four months I doubt you'll be asked. be careful of the food in thailand as some steret stalls are a bit dodgy. When you put the seatbelt on, put the blanket underneath to ease pressure in case it's needed. I was perfectly fine!

I travelled to Canada when I was 11 weeks, then back again just as I hit 14 weeks, going out from NZ was the worst - but either way keeping hydrated (if I could keep it down) was the key.

Thanks for your advice girls. I think the only thing that worries me a little is the food and water in Thailand not being 100% safe. Will think seriously about this trip and see if it is worth going.

I flew to Florida when I was 20 weeks and was there for almost 4 weeks. If you're flying Qantas, I recommend sucking up to the check in people and looking as uncomfortable as possible! They actually promised to upgrade me (free) to business class, but in the end there were no spare seats, otherwise they would have. I found travelling was fine, though the plane seats were less than comfortable. Don't be ashamed to ask the trolley-dollies to get you extra pillows, blankets etc if you need them.

In the hotel in Phuket, the hotel provided us with bottled water. We also used it to brush our teeth. and rinse our toothbrushes. We had a great time, even though I was pregnant - and we had our eight month old with us too!! The food was okay, but we tried to eat only at restaurants (remember I didn't know I was pregnant!). It was wonderful just hanging out at the beach or pool. I'd say "go for it"

I'm due to fly to the Gold Coast in May when I am 18 weeks or so, and again in August when I am around 30-ish weeks.

When I was preg wth Maya I flew to Sydney at 18 weeks and was fine. Like the others have said, be careful of the food in a place like Thailand, and also be careful of the plane food - it has been sitting around for a good couple of hours before it gets to you. Luckily I flew business class so I just stocked up on extra bread rolls, but this time round I will be pcking a lunchbox!

PS. We always fly Qantas too (we fly a lot)and they have always been excellent, especially when I fly on my own with Maya.

We're thinking about taking Jono's kids away for the night somewhere close to Auckland over the school holidays. Do you think that might be cutting things a bit fine???? I'll probably be a week out from due date......

Claire, I don't think they'll let you fly that late. You will have to have a note from your doctor (not sure if midwife is okay). I'd check before you buy tickets. I* think 36 weeks is the latest.

Oh no, we won't be flying anywhere. More like Orewa, or possibly Miranda.

you may have problems with travel insurance, some wont cover you past as early as 24 weeks if you have complications or give birth while over there.
Just something to bear in mind

Claire - you should be fine with Orewa as it's not too far if you go into labour to shoot back. But bear in mind that not all babies come on time/late! I had booked a holiday to Paihia for Willie and I for the week before Maya was due - she came two weeks early! So we ended up postponing and went when Maya was 6 weeks old instead.

Oh, reading back you aren't flying, just driving - go for it!

Now you've got my blessing, you'll HAVE to go.

We're flying over to LA in June, I'll be 20 weeks. I hadn't thought about the food sitting around so long Maya, I'll have to bring something with me to eat I guess, thanks for that.

Thanks Liz, I feel much happier about it now

Yeah, think we might go to Orewa, or even Wenderholm if they have cabins and accommodation.
