There is an article on close up tonight about folic acid and the problems that can occur if you don't have enough.

I did... the article basically was about how folic acid suppliments sold in supermarkets and health stores only have 300mg of folic acid per pill, but 800mg is the recommended daily amount.
It seems the suppliments are regulated by a law passed in 1985, and the manufacturers are pushing for a review that will allow them to up the dosage (to 500mg - same as in Aussie). The only place you can get folic acid in the right dosage is from a pharmacy.

I watched the 60 minutes piece on midwives, and to be honest, I felt that they didn't give the poor woman from the College of Midwives a fair enough go. She has copped a heap of flak from all corners lately, when for the most part, midwives do a good job. I don't think any midwife WANTS to lose a baby, just as no parent wants to lose a baby, but unfortunately not all in life is fair or perfect.
Although I was amazed that the midwife in one case didn't do a vaginal exam and the second case they didn't call for an obstetrician. My midwife was so careful during my labour, she went and got the registrar on duty 3 or 4 times to check Maya's heart rate etc. and for them to check progress. And I was upset that the midwives concerned said that they wouldn't change anything in hindsight - that seemed to me a bit moral highground - anyone in that situation given the chance to do things again would aim for a better outcome.
I do think we as women need to take some responsibility tho, and make our positions clear on interventions. I made it quite clear to m y m/w with Maya that I wanted a natural delivery if possible but was prepared to have whatever it took to get her out in one piece, and will bedoing the same again.

I agree about the birth plan. I said to my midwife that the first sign of problems I wanted a c section, I would not risk losing baby and was paranoid that my baby would get stuck coming out. I missed both the folic acid programme and the midwife one bugger it all. I do think they are giving the midwifes a bit of a hard time at the moment though.

In some respects I'm glad I watched that, but in a lot of ways I'm not I wish they'd had a warning about the pictures of the babies because then I ended up all
I think it's hard to paint an 'even' picture of things, and while the College of Midwives is the largest professional practice association in NZ for midwifery, not all midwives are going to hold the same opinions as what we were shown through that TV piece.
And yes, Elevit does have the required / recommended 800mcg of folic acid, I just wish the pills weren't so large !!

i felt for the lady from cmw as i also dont think they gave her a fighting chanhce i think that was heading toward a negtive view on midwifes although i do agree that midwifes should do everything in there power for a safe brith with brithof james i wanted a nautaul brith in water with no durgs just like my mother(minis the water)it endeed up the oppestit and my midwife did everthing in her power for intervition it was the specilits that keep putting off a c-section in hope for a v-brith i think midwifes need surport and woman need surport in what seems a very male sidede view to brith and compacatios

I think the one point that quite a lot of people might miss (not you ladies, I mean people in general) is one the CoM lady made - that you can't generalise these things, it depends entirely on the context and the individual woman giving birth as to what is 'safe' and what is not.

No I didn't tape it sorry deborah - don't even know how to work my VCR. Did anyone else tape it?
I agree with Jax completely about the context being the key - I felt it was very unfair, and poor journalism (says the journalist in me!) that the interviewer shot down a comment she made about water births being safer in some cases than hospital births. IMO, if there are no complications and the idea of birthing in water makes a mother feel more relaxed then it is absolutely safer than a hospital birth. On the other hand, for someone with a history of complications or a first time Mum with no birthing history it's a different story.
