     Topic: Contraception/mini pill     Posted: 01 May 2008 at 8:21am |

Can anyone recommend some contraception please!

I have been given the mini pill by the mw but after reading the info in the pack and hearing from others -it says its side effects are amongst many - depression, acne, skin discolouration and weight gain ( like I need that right now!)
So what are you guys on?, I hear there is an injection?
I don't want any more babys for at least 2 years..
Thanks ladies

i personally wouldnt do depo... that (injection) is great as with lots of people it stops periods..it has heaps of side affects too though( i only got the moods but there are more and some people have none) and if you want more babies it can take up to a year to get periods back and sometimes it screws them up..(mine took 7 months )

we are doing the condom thing.. :(

Might be worth noting that heaps of drugs state there can be many side effects, but you never have any problems...? I was on mini pill for a while and didn't have any problems with it other than trying to remember to take it... I was on normal pill for a long time (before Luke) and never had any problems...

Think there can be similar side effects from many of the contraception drugs...

i am on the injection and have had no problems but I have no problems with most drugs. Are you breastfeeding? cause that will effect what contraception you can take

I would go IUD. But that's just me.

I was on depo but was a witch. Although that could have just been me. haha

The mini pill gave me much less side effects (you'll find all the hormonal ones give that warning just to cover all bases) but I got preggo.

 IUD for me!

I'd talk to family planning about it if I were you - they can tell you about all your options

Depends on whether you are planning more kiddies or not. The IUD is not recommended if you are. If you are not, what about your DH getting the snip hehe
If you are, I am sure there is a rod that you get under your skin on your arm- popular in Australia I think.

i got preg with Eden on the mini pill and i took it religiously, the implant in your arm isnt available in NZ yet (but is fantastic, my sister has it and its great) im booked in to get an IUD in a week they generally wont give them to people who arent in serious/stable relationship or v young for the simple fact they dont stop STDs, there is a slightly higher chance of having an eptopic pregnancy and in very rare cases can cause slight scarring to the uterus wall and can cause reduced fertility, but my doctor said it was fine im not planning on having anymore for 2+ years and said the IUD is perfect. i believe that if you are 22yrs or older the IUD cost about $90 for "installation"

I don't think the IUD increases the chance of an ectopic - I thought it just increased the chances of things going wrong IF an ectopic occurred? Could be very wrong though.

You can get the IUD taken out earlier than the 5 years if you want to have kiddos in the meantime.

Ok so from experience the mini pill was really dumb for me it caused some breakthrough bleeding nd I got terrible headaches all the time and you had to be full time BF and my best friend got pregnant on it. I would suggest the iud, I had it after the mini pill and never worried about contraception, it didnt hurt to have it in or out and u can choose between the copper one which can give slightly heavier periods or the mirena which costs but will make ur periods light and quick. I got mine taken out because it was the copper one and I had a reaction to it.... like 1 in 1000 people do so weird but next time I will go with the Mirena or just try charting and temping and stuff. your fertility returns straight away after having a IUD removed, I got preg like 2 weeks later lol and yes you can have a ectopic but its very rare
