Help me out here, until now Hannah has basically had a "front bottom" and a "back bottom". Now DH wants to take her to the next step but he's teaching her that the front is called the vagina. I don't want her to start coming out with random "touching my vagina" comments that could get taken the wrong way! What do you teach your girls to call their "front bottoms"?

We call different body parts by their names, vagina and penis included.

Michaela isn't saying much of anything yet but when my niece was almost 3 yo I was getting ready for a wedding at her house and she wandered into the room and announced "Aunty Jo you're a girl" I said "how do you know?" to which she responded "because you have a vegona". I PMSL! It was sooooo cute!

So do you call all of the front pelvis the vagina? Bearing in mind that the vagina is only a small (and invisible) part of that?

It is good to let her know the "technical" names (althou it is vulva - vagina will be fine) so that she does actually know them.

My friends daughter knows its her fanny.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

vulva! that's the word I was looking for before - I faltered and tried labia instead.

EDIT: Funny story -
Hannah says to me, what's the 'handbag' that your wees goes in? (this carries on from a convo where all the organs are other body parts inside were likened to handbags with things in them) and I said the bladder and pointed on my body where it is.

Then I said to her, the place your poos waits in is called the bowel. And she laughed and said "I can bow!" and proceeded to do a full sweeping bow down to the floor!

It's still a front bottom here, she knows the real names but it seems a bit clinical to call them that in conversation.
Not like we have conversations about them or anything lol...

I'm just trying to imagine a conversation where I would have to distinguish the different parts, I haven't crossed that bridge yet (not even with my niece who's now almost 8). No doubt you'll all here about it if/when I do.

There is a new programme being introduced into creches, daycares kindies etc. Can't remember the exact name but part of it is that you need to refer to 'bits' by there correct name. We refer to penis as peanut but have now started using the correct name

yep fanny and bottom here. although, we have been reading the folk of the faraway tree lately and when we first began reading it paris was near in hysterics when i said what the kids names were because of courses there is a girl named fanny to which she said "why would her mum call her THAT?!" it was quite funny.

We don't have big conversations, but i feel with her reaching school age, and going to a big school in the middle of town, that i need to be teaching her a bit more about keeping herself safe, there used to be the great programme that went round kindys.. they haven't come to our daycare.

So we have always talked about good surprises, ie- ones that make you feel nice and happy etc, like birthdays, those are ones that are ok to keep. but secrets, or bad secrets that make her feel yucky are not ok to keep etc.. and we have gone through just in passing conversations about good touch and bad touch. I definately think there comes a stage where they need to learn that not all people out there are good, and that they need to be able to keep themselves safe and know the difference between what's ok and what's not, and that may just extend to some silly kid showing their privates at school, or to something more icky.. but very important i think. So the girls known the technical terms, but they just use the slang.

It's called 'lady parts' here (and boys have a doodle), just because that's the terminology that I use.  But I'll teach Ella the correct names when she's older, but I imagine still use slang to refer to them in conversation, so long as she knows what the actual names of them refer to.

he he - lady parts!! SOrry that just made me giggle. Front bottom here too. Will teach her proper names when she is a bit older, as I can just see her talking about it at the most embarrassing time now - like on the weekend at the Warehouse waiting in line I said we had some peas to plant in our garden, to which she replied very loudly "beans make you fart aye mum?!" Yeah thanks for teaching her that dad! Sorry a bit OT there...

That programme is a preschool version of kepping ourselves safe. Andrew's preschool brought it in late last year.

"Bum" for her backside and "gina" for her front - that's 'gEYEna' (like eyeball) rather than the girls name!
