Topic: Car seat hire prices Posted: 04 May 2008 at 12:00pm |
I have been offered a nice car seat for $50. Thing is, I might not need it for long, like 4 months, before we move to Aussie for a while. So I'm trying to find out if it would be cheaper to hire. I need to decide if I want the car seat today and the Plunket hire places are closed.
Appearantly it's a different price depending on where you live. We are in Nelson. Does anyone have any idea on cost?

I think ours is about $50 but if you are getting a base or the wheels it costs extra and there is also a bond. (which you get back if its all ok at the end) We are in Tauranga tho so yours will probably be different, can you see if there is anything online? Also I know our baby factory does rentals as well, do you have one in Nelson you can ring and ask how much?

Wont you need it in Australia? If you buy it you could then sell it after four months and get some of the money back.

We're trying to cut down on stuff to take to Aussie, they always have great garage sales there and my family are on the look out for stuff we will need there.
Yes, I'm thinking I will buy it as $50 seems to be the price for hire in many towns.
Thanks for the advice ladies

I hired the gremlins ones then regretted it coz I could have bought ex-rentals cheaper from The Baby Factory, which is what we planned to do this time till we came across a brand new one on sale for $99 so bought that.
$50 is good, I'd buy it.
Also, FYI it's illegal to sell second hand carseats in Australia so if you don't take one with you, you will need to buy a brand new one when you get there. Mum and Dad were going to buy a second hand one for when we visited when Maya was born but ended up having to buy brand new, and carseats there are more expensive than here.

No probs. It's pretty dumb if you ask me, coz you can sell pretty much anything else second hand and some of those old lead-painted cots are waaaay dodgier than a second hand carseat!

Maya
I have no idear bout the secound hand carseat thing in Aussie but i just looked on ebay and people are selling them. We are going next year and i have been told that alot of the carseats here do not meet there safety standards so you cant use them there and can get a fine. I had no idear when i took my daughter when she was a baby in the go safe carseat i had and they dont meet there standards. Its all so dif to here.

Unless things have changed since I had Maya which is entirely possible. But I do know that second hand stores still don't sell them coz there is a lady up the road from mum and dad's who runs a shop for the local twin club and Mum and Dad have bought all their baby stuff from her except the carseats, even as recently as when we needed a second one for the gremlins (mid last year) she said it was illegal to sell them.
Interesting what you say about the GoSafe too as Mum ended up buying a Mothers Choice one from Kmart there that is exactly the same as the GoSafe ones. Bonnie (CRS) would know which ones meet both Oz and NZ standards tho.

Yep car seats are at least $100 - $200 more here than in NZ. From what I have seen in shops and brochures there are only 2 main different types of capsules and all have the base. I hope these pics work .
$250 - 350AU
$269 - $350AU

I had that safe and sound baby seat in the bottom pic and just sold it as i have a maxi cosi. Now i will have to buy one again as i cant use my maxi cosi in Aussie

Hehe Yeah it is really cute . What part of aussie are you moving to?? Each state has different regulations and guidelines.
I'd say if it says it meets NZ and AU standards you should be ok assuming it hasnt been in an accident or past its expiry date.

We're going to Perth. Do car seats have a 10 year expiry? In that case it's good until 2012.

Im not too sure how long the expiry runs for. I think they are stated on the underside of the carseat.
Here is a Link that may help with hire if you need it. We are in Brisbane so I dont know the regulations in Perth, sorry. But here are some sites that may help.

AandR'smum I would have thought it would have been ok, but then again its Aus and they have some weird regulations.
Here is a web site that might be useful if you are ok with hireing.
