A blood test would give a definite answer as it can measure if there is any hCG in your blood at all. hCG takes longer to show up in urine and can be diluted by things like drinking etc. plus the HPT's can only detect over a certain level (25IUI or higher) whereas the blood test can detect even a tiny amount.

Don't feel too bad - I don't get a postive result on a home test until I'm at least 13 days late! A blood test should give you a definite answer if you don't want to wait any longer.

Good luck honeybee ...you must be going around the twist! It'd drive me batty being almost 2 weeks over and getting negative tests I think a trip to the doctors would be a good idea, just so you can know either way - it would put your mind at rest, and if you are pregnant, it would stop you worrying early in the pregnancy, and the relief of stress would be good for baby to settle in. In my humble child-less opinion. Actually, I wouldn't have a clue, but it has to be better if you can put your mind at rest!

I'm very sorry about your M/Cs - I hope that your next pregnancy is trouble free.

Oh ..woops. I can't read. 8 days is not nearly two weeks. 8 days is just over one week. I blame pre-AF brain for that little dumbarse comment. It'd still drive me batty anyway at 8 days. It drives me batty if I'm 1 day!! Then again, I'm an aires AND a redhead. I'm batty anyway

You said it, Simmone! It's me who doesn't get a postive result until close to two weeks Drove me nuts! I was so sure I was pregnant (with Josiah), did tests 3 days in a row... wasn't until the third one (13 days late) that I got a positive result! This time round, I did a test 14 days late, but didn't get a positive result... I did another one a month later, and then got the postive!

Hey Becca ...First, I've just noticed on your ticker that you've gone over the 12 week mark - I know it's an important mark, so congratulations!

You know, this is not inspiring me with confidence this HPT business ...as if this whole process wasn't as insanity-inducing as it is!! I seem to spend the entire month going balmy, and only feeling like I've gathered my wits for a few days when AF arrives. The rest of the time is waiting, wondering, hoping, getting grouchy as AF symptoms set in

I'm starting to think that hubby and I are going to have to see a specialist. I will wait until the end of cycle 12 though before I visit the doctor, as I really don't want to take that step. So, AF is due in a week or so, and that is the end of cycle 10. I know we had the early M/C during cycle 9, but if nothing has happened again by the start of cycle 13, I think it's probably time, bugger it. Can anyone tell me what happens at that point?

Actually, I should probably add some detail here re my above post. I was under a phenominal amount of stress at the end of the year, and that really only eased off about a month or so ago. Work stress was dreadful leading into the end of the year, and I was physically exhausted, and emotionally stretched, and basically went 'splat' at the end of the year, and (I don't want to admit to this, but I will) I ended up on anti-depressants to try and get my feet back under me. Very very low dose I have to say, just enough to give me a hand with my scattered mind.

Anyway ...in that context, I guess it's not surprising that we haven't conceived, is it really? Maybe I should give it an extra 6 months before panicking. Last year, when we started trying, was an extremely hard year, and I'm taking much more time this year to take care of me, and so is hubby - taking care of me that is!

Right. That's my secret out.

There's nothing embarrassing about taking antidepressants, Simmone. If that's what you need to get through a difficult period in your life, then good on you for recognising you needed that little bit of extra help!

I took antidepressants a few years ago after some medication left me quite depressed, and as a result both Nat and myself keep a close eye on my moods as I tend to start getting depressed now when I get overwhelmed.

You're so not alone Simonne! I have clinical depression, was diagnosed at 18 and it was a lightbulb moment - finally I understood why I had been feeling so bad for so long! Have been on and off the antidepressants ever since.

I am (very tentatively) off my antidepressants until I hit 12 weeks with this baby, my midwife said then we'll play a wait and see game, if I cope without them I will stay off them as is better for bubs. I was fine when I was preg with Maya, and when she was born didn't get PND even tho I was at very high risk of it with my history which was good.

Anyways, back to your original question - the first thing your doc will do is order some blood tests to see how your hormone levels are. They usually check your Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinising Hormone levels around CD2-4 and then do a progesterone level 7 days before you expect your next AF/7 days after ovulation in a normal cycle. That will tell them if you are ovulating, and if you have a good supply of healthy eggs.

If all that is normal, you might be referred for an u/s to check that you don't have any structural probs or obvious blockages/endometriosis.

If still nothing, they might start talking more invasive stuff like a hysterosalpinogram (HSG) which is a tubal flush, or Laperoscopic (sp) surgery to see what is going on, but those are both pretty dramatic things - most people's probs can be sorted at the hormonal level.

Very very normal thing Simonne to be on some form of mood assisstance medication (so to speak). Lots and lots of people go on medication for a while and are sweet afterwards and it must be said that you were very courageous to even go on the medication - so many people have those kinds of problems that can easily be fixed - if not made a lot more bearable - with medication. The whole stigma of being on that kind of medication means that so many people won't even go there. Its awesome that you did.

To add to what has already been said...you doc will prolly also get your hubby to provide a sample so the lab can make sure his swimmers are there, active, normal and have a sense of direction!

Good luck!

I have to admit to fighting the ADs when my doctor suggested it, but she was right. I'm really lucky that a 'barely there' dose was enough to put me on my feet and keep me on a even level while I got over the hump. Looking back I was beyond exhausted, and just couldn't cope with anything at all. It was hard not getting pregnant immediately as that was what was supposed to happen () and my SIL was, and it was all I ever heard about from her and my MIL. Anyway - everything put together = a blubbering mess of me!!

I've already had a U/S (about 9 months ago) to check out my internal bits so I can cross that one off - everything was as it should be. I'd been having terrible pain, and it'd just drop me where I stood when it came on, always out of the blue. There is no way I could describe it - it was horrendous. Anyway, had an internal and external ultrasound and everything was perfect ...and believe it or not, once I stopped taking the pill I never had another niggle! You really have to wonder about what goes into those things!

Maybe the holiday post was after this (too lazy to check dates) but I think that's a great idea... worry about doctors etc after you've had some time to relax!

Yes Nikki, it was I was thinking about it all yesterday, musing out loud a bit here (it's so great that we can), and then when me and Al were at the park last night walking with our dogs I had a good talk to him about it
