Hi everyone
I'm new to these boards so I thought I would post my story and say hello.

I'm Emily, I'm 27, DH is 35 and we are in Christchurch. I came off BCP in Jan 07 and we started actively TTC in March 07. When we first made the decision to TTC we went to our GP and I had the usual blood test done and he prescribed folica acid and said to give it 12 months and see what happens. I have been going back to him every 3 months for a new folic acid prescription. When I went back in Jan 08 even though it had been 12 months since we had started trying he said to give it a couple more months. When I went back in March 08 he said they had just received a new directive from the gynaecology department that they won't see anyone unless they have been trying for 2 YEARS . So he ordered a SA for my DH (which we are doing tomorrow) and if that comes back normal we just have to keep waiting. I have decided to start looking into some natural options so today I'm going to buy Femzone and Flaxseed Oil. I have been considering Acupuncture but DH has vetoed that idea so I'll be sticking to herbs and stuff.

Hi Emily281
I read your story and I think that it might be worth seeing another doc. My doc told me I had to wait 18mths before they run tests and things but then I changed doc and saw my new one on Friday to confirm my BFP and when I told him my story he said that as soon as my 12mth came up he would start monthly blood test and get me to start charting even though I'm 22 with two kids.

I took 2 femzone a day and one my third month taking it I got my BFP so I think it really works.

Goodluck

Hi Emily

Is that through the public health system? Did you realise that you can 'jump the queue' so to speak by going to a private fertility specialist and paying for those initial consultations? It will cost you a couple of hundred, but might be worth it! You can then jump back across to the public system for any fertility treatment you may need.

Hi Everyone
Thanks for the welcome.
Helen - I don't think its the doctor - it's more the DHB. I think they're just swamped so they've extended it to buy themselves some more time. Of course in 6 months they're going to get swamped with all the people they've been putting off for a year.

Ginger - it is through the public system. I have looked into private and I think it would be more than a couple of hundred. It's $200 for the initial consultation, $130 for follow up consultations. Plus then you have to pay for the tests. A SA or ultrasound is $90 so I imagine the blood tests would be similar and then if I need an HSG or lap I hate to think how much it would cost. I would rather wait another 6 months for testing and then go private for treatment as the public waiting lists for surgery and/or ARP are huge. So I'd rather wait and save the money for treatment.

Basically my plan at the moment is to try the Femzone and Flax oil for 3 months to see if it improves my hideous PMS and AFs and then go back to the doc and say putting the fertility thing aside can we start investigating the pain and clots that I have during AF.

That's interesting - my initial consultation with Fertility Associates cost $175 and included an ultrasound. DH's SA was $90.00, and our final consultation was possibly as much as $150 but certainly no more. What this did do though was cut out time spent on waiting lists and, believe me, the time on waiting lists is incredible. Just waiting for your initial consultation can be months. I'm concerned that you'll hit your 2 year mark and THEN go on the waiting list!

What we found is that by forking out a few hundred for private consultations to get the ball rolling, we shot up the waiting list for publicly funded treatment for fertility (IVF with ICSI) and our wait from start to finish before starting IVF was only 8 months as opposed to a projected 2+ years creeping through the public system from the start.

As for a lap - yes, they're pricey. The bill for mine came through at around $12,000.

Wishing you all the best!

Hi Ginger
I've thought about it, but I'm not sure DH would go for it. I'm prepared to give it another few months and then if we eventually do get put onto a long waiting list maybe go private then.

My cycles have gotten kind of weird since going off the pill and my AFs are definitely getting worse so I suspect either some kind of hormonal imbalance or endo. My Family Planning Doctor 10 years ago suspected endo but I didn't do anything about it. I'm hoping that all the natural things I'm taking can help and if not I'll go back to my GP and see if I can get referred to a gyno for endo testing. Hopefully then it should be covered by my private health insurance.

Yeah, that's sometimes the rub! It can take our dear boys a wee while to get their heads around further investigation. Don't forget too, that 90% of couples conceive within 18 months, and it just may be a case of more time (I know I almost hate myself for saying it!).

With your possible endo, it's definitely worth looking into that now because it takes your body time to recover from the surgery, and if you look into alternative healing/fertility things, it will certainly help to have endo out of the way. Private health insurance usually covers it - mine did. The important thing is that it is NOT linked to fertility issues. Insurance companies will try and wiggle out of paying if they get wind that it's for fertility treatment because most of them don't cover fertility treatment.

I was much the same as you - 12 months after coming off the pill I was in misery with my periods. It's because things aren't being controlled by artificial hormones I think.

I'd suggest keeping track of your cycles because that can be very useful for your endo specialist if you go down that track.

Hi Ginger
I've been keeping track of my cycles for 17 months now I guess that's what annoys me the most about being told I have to wait another 12 months. I've been tracking my cycles and our timing has been perfect but its still not happening. It's not like we've only been guessing and just doing it whenever we feel like (that went out the window about 15 months ago!!!! ) I'm hoping that all the natural remedies I'm trying will at least give me normal cycles back. If I can get through them without having to pop nurofen and panadol like candy and sleep the afternoon away I could probably live with everything else. And who knows maybe when we get DH's SA results back we might get some answers.

I also had very painful af's and ov after coming off depo and I had a very short luteal phase, femzone started reducing the pain for after the first month then sorted my cycles out by the second month.

Hi Helen
Thanks for that. Since coming off BCP in Jan 07 my cycles have gone from perfect 29 days cycles with O on CD15 to anywhere between 26 and 33 days with O anywhere between CD15 and CD21. For the past year or so I've only had a 10 day LP so I'm hoping that the Femzone and the B6 will help.

Hi Serenna and welcome
It depends on what you mean by kick in... It's main ingredient is Vitex which is a slow acting thing so it usually takes up to 3 months to become fully effective. However last month was my first month taking it and it definitely made me O earlier.

Hi Serenna
No, I don't have PCOS. My O date has just got later since coming off the pill. I had about 6 months of Oing on CD15 and then it went from anywhere between CD18 and CD21 with a 10-12 day LP. So I tried Femozne and B6 and Flaxseed oil last month and I O'd on CD13 and managed a 14 day LP for the first time ever. However that was also the worst AF I have had in a LONG time and as I have my gynaecologist appointment this month and am also doing CD3 and CD21 bloods I stopped taking the Femzone. Today is CD13 and I haven't O'd yet but I think I probably will in the next couple of days.

Good luck with Oing - I hope the Femzone works for you. Where are you at in your cycle?

Hi Emily and welcome

I know your DH isn't keen on acupuncture, but its something that I would highly recommend. They can help with your endo (if you have it) and AF pains. They can even help to make sure you are ovulating.

I've had such success with acupuncture on a number of personal issues.

All the very best.

Hi Serenna
CD = Cycle Day (the first day of AF is CD1)
AF = Aunt Flo or your period
LP = Luteal Phase - the time between Ovulation and AF
O = Ovulation

I was also taking B6 to help lengthen my LP as it was only usually around 10 days. As far as I know Femzone is to help regulate hormones so I'm not sure how much it will help someone with PCOS. You might be better off asking questions in the Coping with Infertiltiy section as I think there are some people in there with PCOS. Have you spoken to a doctor?
