We have some neat hot pools near where I live and Im really keen to take DS to them.....but I have heard you shouldn't until they are 6 months
Is this true? If so, why?

I think it has to do with germs etc, but don't quote me on that!

I am not sure - I know that you def shouldnt put their ears under at the hot pools because of all the nasty germy jims. I try not to even put my ears under at the hot pools!

Hmmm well I took Issy to her first swimming class today ... although the pool isnt hot ... since they take kiddies from three months at swim schools I would have thought it would be ok.

It's to do with their immune systems and resistance and ability to regulate temperature, but I've never worried too much. Mum was a NZ representative swimmer and had us in the water at 6 weeks old, and my girls have all had their first dips before 3 months. Just no heads under as Sam said, partly coz of germs and also coz it can upset their ears.

I heard it was because they can't regulate their body temperatures until six months. At this time of year I wouldn't take a very young baby swimming because it is quite cold when you get out. Summer is probably ok though.

I cant speak for hot pools, but I have been taking Oli swimming (to lessons) since he was 3months old. We havent had any ear infections, bugs, colds, sniffles or anything, and he goes under no problems. The places we go has the pool really warm - but not hot.

Yeah I was just going to say the same thing KA, although that's with the council run ones I wonder if private lessons would be different?

I wear swim shorts and a swim t shirt to swimming. There is one pool in chch that takes them at 3 months because their pool is warmer than the others I can't remember which one it is but I found it via google.

Re the hot pools, give them a ring and ask them which ones you can take bubba in to. We took Spencer to Hanmer Springs and I just asked which ones were suitable for him to go into. Although I wouldn't take him in the winter anyway cos its frekkin freezing when you get out.
