I took Ella to the Doc's last night 'cause she's been miserable this weekend but I wasn't able to put my finger on the prob... so I asked for ears and urine to be checked, and whaddaya know, the poor child has a UTI bad enough for blood to be present 
Thing is, how do I prevent these? It's her second one but she's only 19mths, and the first landed her a hospital stay - she doesn't do them by halves. Ella may not drink a great deal of clear water but she drinks some each day and has as much as I can make her have! She drinks healthy juices too, and still has 2 bottles a day. We only wipe front to back when changing and washing her, and of course the other way to prevent them only applies to adult women, not my baby. Yes, she might be 'unlucky' when it comes to these- I used to get them as a child but never bad like hers, and her uncle had kidney surgery for them. But she's had all the tests done, and they found no kidney reflux and no scarring. Is there something I'm missing here, some bit of info I never figured out?

Awww I have no experience here but no wonder Miss Ella was not so impressed with anything yesterday! Hope she gets well soon.

I found this on www.familydoctor.org. I'm not sure how helpful it is - you may already be doing these things.
How can we prevent UTIs?
Here are some things that may help prevent UTIs in your child:
* Avoid giving your child bubble baths.
* Dress your child in loose-fitting clothing (including underpants).
* If you have a girl, teach her to wipe from front to back after she uses the bathroom so that germs from the rectum aren't wiped into the vagina.
* Some children don't go to the bathroom often enough. If your child does this, teach him or her to go to the bathroom several times each day.
Do you use baby wipes? She may be sensitive to the solution. If you use cloth wipes instead maybe run them through a dettol wash.

I second the cranberry juice! Great stuff for prevention. I use to get them really bad as child and ended up on AB's for a year as a preventive which work well and never had another one until I was pregnant.
The Dr also said to mum not to use soap or bubble bath or anything in that area. I got a special soap but can't remember its name.

Ah - cranberry juice!! I forgot about that one. Thanks guys. We don't use soap on Ella at all, since she's a sensitive wee petal.
T - she was in a good mood at church!! you should have seen her at home - argh!

McKayla has had a bout while MIL was here (and I think I blame the junk she gave the freaking child ect and it caused irritation with her keeping wee in as it was too acidic and ended up with UTI)
Anyway what helped was no soap whatsoever. Other thing is either use Bicarb of soda in the bathwater or best thing ever is Roobos tea. South AFrica isle might see it in the normal isle as redbush tea. Use two bags in the bath or even make a solution and put the wipes in there and use it. It helps with the irritation. Then make a cup of tea and give it to her. No need for sugar or milk. McKayla just love the stuff and it really works wonders.
Other thing that helps is to make diluted apple juice ice lollies and let her suck on that if you have trouble getting her to drink water.

Poor wee Ella! I hope she's all better really quickly.
I second Smoody, Rooibos tea really is a wondercure, its really soothing and you can use it on any irritations or sores as a natural remedy. It's quite yummy too.
Can you give littlies Ural? That would help a lot if she could take it, not having sting-y wees!

poor thing...
If you're going down the cranberry juice track make sure it's got no added sugar, cause sugar makes them worse (i went through a really bad patch - blood and all TMI!!).
cranberry tablets from hardies are fantastic - one a day and i've never had a recurrence...
also there's a homeopathic remedy that i found really good but can't for the life of me remember what it's called - ask a health store about it.

One question tho - did they do a catheter urine or just a bag urine? Bag urines are notorious for picking up all and sundry, we got rushed to hospital by ambulance when Mercedes was 9 weeks coz a bag urine showed blood in her urine. We got to Starship and they did a cath urine and it was clear, turned out the fever etc. was viral. The kidney doc told me later that he never relies on bag urines.
Not that that helps you much, just an insight.
As for what to do to help with UTI's, ouch, I feel her pain! I swear by citravescent but I don't know if you can give that to kids? And I also take a high dose of cranberry tablets which work more effectively than cranberry juice.

Where about are you? Apparently there is a huge UTI epidemic down here in invers (the doctors were overheard discussing it at the hospital by a friend of mums) Its girls of all ages affected and my 16yr old cuz had the same problem and my mum seems to think the common link is the swimming pool

Good lord I've never heard of them being contagious! Oh dear. Emma they did the bag this time - last time was a bag and catheta. I was dubious about the bag, too - though I have had one of Ella's come back clear once so I guess they aren't always wrong. The nurse who ran the test told me that the entire sample 'glowed', suggesting a great deal of white blood cells, and that there was blood in there too, which I imagine couldn't have appeared from cross-contamination. The lab will do a culture to define exactly what kinds of bacteria it is, which will give more info in a couple of days. But I hear ya on the bags being unreliable thing. Argh - bring on potty training!

Yup, they picked up blood in Mercedes bag urine as well  Made for a lot of anxiety over nothing, esp as Sienna had the kidney surgery the previous week! The cultures should give more of an idea tho. And yep, they're not *always* wrong, just often. They always do them on Sienna as a first test coz if they are clear then they can guarantee she doesn't have an infection.
Good luck! If it is a second UTI do you think it's worth getting her kidneys etc. checked again?
