My daughter has just turned 8 months old, and has just weighed in at 6.44kg. She has only put on 300grams in the last 2 months. She has been slow to thrive since she was born.

Plunket is not worried as she is a happy and healthy girl. I just find it frustrating because she has been eating solids (3 meals, plus arvo snack) really well, and still has 4-5 breast feeds per 24 hours. Plunket has advised putting a bit of cream in her dinner to add calories.

She is very active, and has been crawling since 5 1/2 months. She is now starting to stand by herself. I'm not sure if she's burning the calories fast because she's so active, or if I'm doing something wrong.

Anyone else in the same boat?

my bestfriends little girl is 20months an is only 12kgs (just) she was an early crawler and was walking at 8.5months, and she is tiny, but v v healthy and she eats like a horse, its just the way she is, so like plunket said, if your little girl is happy and healthy then u certainly arent doing anything wrong, im sure you would notice a change in her mood if you were doin anything she didnt like,

so it sounds like you little girl is just going to be an active quick little girl, so i wouldnt worry, big hugs to you though!!

I think if everything is in proportion they generally don't worry - head diameter, height and weight etc

jack was 7.5kg at 9mths but he was small at birth.....as long as she is doing everything she's meant to be and is in proportion, she'll be fine

Yup, I have a happy healthy toddler. At 9 months she weighed 6.7 kg. At 15 months she weighed 7.79 kg (so she's off the charts now). She's only 10th percentile for height so she's little all over and she started off very average at 3.4kg (50th percentile)

Petite kids are gorgeous. The most frustrating thing is when you go to the doctor because they're having an off time and the first thing they do is blame it on them not having enough food. Well yes, I'm giving her everything she'll take. You can't forcefeed them.

Mybelly, 12 kg's at 20 months sounds huge to me.   Lucy would have to gain nearly a kilo per month to get to that size and I know that ain't going to happen.

I have a wee little dot. Actually, i kinda have 2 of them.

With Paris She ate well and still didn't really do too much, but her weight gain was slow and steady and in proprtion really - apart from the fact that her height was over the 75th percentile, and her weight was under the 25th percentile on the charts..   She still is like that now, she's nearly 5, is slowing down a little in terms of height but is taller than most of her mates, and currently weighs in at mere 16 kilos.

Ayja, was even smaller, only 2800gms at birth (6lb 2oz), she eats like a horse, will eat till everything is gone, doesn't listen to her body's cues when we think she MUST surely be full. nope, she wants more.   yet, again, slow and steady. She turns 3 this coming sunday and currently tips the scales at (oooh a whopping...) 11kg. at age 2, she was 10kg, at age 1, she was just over 8kg, so basically despite eating like a piglet and having a cute budha belly on her the size of a preggy lady, she on average gains about a kilo a year.

I used to be a bit upset about it all, but learnt not to be so sensitive. Look at the genetics, look at yourself and your partner, and your families and see the trends.   All of my family are shorties, Paris is doing really well for her age comparitively, and well, since their dad has never been over 36kgs in his life, i don't expect them to be hugely stocky children. Already paris has the little spindly ankles and skinny pins legs, cos she keeps going up and not doing anything about the going out side of things.

You're doing well, your wee girl is jsut petite, and as long as everything is in proprtion and she's happy and healthy, that's all that matters.

Elle was around the same weight at 8 months and at 20 months is still under 11 Kgs. She is very healthy and looks a similar size to her peers despite being lighter and shorter. She has months where she hardly grows then has big spurts. If she is healthy and happy I wouldn't be concerned.

Thank you so much for all your replies!

I will continue to enjoy my happy wee girl and not beat myself up about her slow weight gain.
