I'm needing a rant more than anything! As I know alittle about hcg levels (the fact they need to rise), I cannot believe a nurse I just spoke to gave me 'false' hope. If I was someone who didn't know any better, I may have come away with hope...when I really know there is none. Here is the (shortened) story.

Friday: I phoned nurse and got hcg result 3997. Brown mucous started.

Saturday: Had another test, as yesterdays was only a 341 rise.
Phoned doctors for result - my doctors closed due to computers down and phone went through to backup doctors. Who found todays result and said its gone down since yesterday. Went down by 158.

Sunday (today): Brown mucous, still in minute amount, but still there none the less. Phoned nurse just to ask about no bleeding and keeping scan date.
She said she couldnt find fridays result but a note said i'd phoned for it. She had yesterdays result, so to her it had risen. I said well it has gone down....so what now. We agreed to keeping scan even if I do bleed. So thats ok. Then she spoke to doctor. Then told me that the drop (according to the number I gave here as she couldnt find it) was only 158, that it could be a 'laboratory variation'!! WTF?? She said that although they should rise, that this pregnancy could still be viable seeming as it didn't go down alot! I can't believe she said this! I told her that I did not believe I'd have a good outcome as I know they should rise!
My levels have been slow rising over the last week....not doubling. Which she could see this.

I'm just annoyed that a nurse gave this information. To me it is totally wrong! I haven't started bleeding yet...and would love to believe that hcg could decrease and then go up.....but I KNOW it wont!

What do you think about this nurses practice?

I dont really know what to say...but I mean things could still be ok. I would just be "cautiously optamisic".
Are you having any more hcg done?

hcg is funny thing, most women who fall pregnant dont have hcg testing done there for wouldnt even know if teir hcg had gone down then up again...

I would ask for another test, if it goes down again, well then you know, but if its gone up again then things might just be ok.

Im so sorry you have to go through this, i know how hard it is.

with this pregnancy i had pink bleeding then brown spotting for nearly two weeks!

I guess I have been aware of things because my levels were low. I know women don't normally get tested for hcg levels.
I could get another test done, but can't until tuesday due to tomorrow being public holiday. And even if I went in first thing, the results are in about 2pm and thats when my scan is booked. And thats going to be my best result.
I would love to be optimistic.....but can't find any :(

yeah i know its hard :( i was the same as you when I was bleeding i though nope Im going to miscarry again.

The scan will be able to tell you whats happening hopefully. I had one at 6 weeks and eerything was ok but they couldnt tell me where the blood was coming from...

**hugs** and goodluck hun

I know its hard but try not to stress and just wait for the scan. HcG are so fickle that I wouldn't trust them too much until you've actually seen or not seen a heartbeat.

I'm hoping for a good outcome for you chick!

I am with the others Nefertiti, while rare it is possible for your HCG to drop (it was only a small amount) and then rise again. HCG is fickle.

I would have your scan on Tuesday and see what they see... I have heard of slow rising HCG with drops with vanishing twin syndrom...

Sheza's suggestion of stay caustiously optimistic is a good one. Try an d stay positive, hun!

Good luck, my thoughts are with you.

Think of it this way....you may be about to MC and you are prepared for that but dont think too much about it yet.  Just put it all "on hold".  Wait and see what the scan shows.  you might be suprised and that would be nice but you arent expecting it so you wont be disappointed.  I guess I am saying you have nothing to lose so just go with the flow and we will all keep our fingers crossed for you so you dont have to get your hopes up (we'll get ours up for ya)

Did that make any sense?

Regardless of the outcome there is support here for you. Lots of deep breaths. Maybe a day of distracting yourself tomorrow?

Nefertiti, I have seen your other threads and really feel what an ordeal this has been for you. I seriously think that nurse needs to explain things clearly, and remember they are not giving you an account balance but a life changing result eh!

Think it is great that you are getting such good advice from these positive people.

I can totally understand how this would mess with your head.

I know for me that I had an hcg of 110 on a Friday and spotting and an hcg of 80 on the Saturday and I was told this was outside what would be a normal variation of lab results. (At that time I didn't know that the low numbers in themselves were a bad sign.)

Still, as people have said, vanishing twin syndrome is a possibility and two of my friends have had this happen to them.

Vanillabean - do you know abit more about what happened to your friends? The little I did read said that hcg can go down...then they'll go back up. The decreasing was due to the loss of a twin.

I had a friend go through all this, and even at the scan all they could offer her was "We'll just have to wait and see." WTF kind of professionalism is that?! So she waited and in the meantime had MORE hcg tests then another scan a fortnight later and everything was going well. It was just a small heamatoma on her uterus and she had to take it easy (real easy) in the crucial weeks. Now shes almost 16 weeks and everything is going well, touchwood.

So good luck! Be realistically optimistic is what I say.

I don't think either of them were monitoring the hcg closely before the miscarriages. But my understanding is that both embryos pump out hcg so if one is suddently out of action that might cause the overall hcg levels to drop for a while until the single embryo levels catch up.

Good luck Nefertiti.

God Nerefiti, that's really hard what you've been through! That nurse could've explained things a lot more clearly for you.

Big ((hugs)) mate. How are you doing this morning? I'm sending lots of good strong sticky vibes and hoping it's all gonna turn out ok for you
