Okay, this is probably a dumb question, but since all of you have already been through it, maybe you can shed some light for me...

What actually happens at your first midwife appointment? Is it all talk, and paperwork? or do they do some exciting stuff like measurements, and the doppler thingee-ma-bobbee? I'm actually quite nervous about it.

I'm still trying to wean myself off my obsession of doing HPT on a weekly basis, just to check that I still get two lines (even though I know its silly)

how exciting for you! generally your first appointment is just an introduction to make sure you are happy with her etc and fill in the paper work. I know in christchurch they cant actually register you as a patient until either 11 or 12 weeks but they get everything ready and often give you the form for your 12 weeks scan if you are going to have one. They dont normally try to find a heartbeat until the 12 week appointment because a) its to little and b) mothers might panick if they cant hear it. You may need to pee on a stick to check protiens etc but again I think that starts at the next appointment. I was really worried that i woudl have to have all these examinations and lovely things like that but they dont do that at all.

Yip at mine I was just asked lots of questions, medical history etc and the only "physical" thing done was my weight and blood pressure. I was told I couldn't be registered until 15 weeks which was when I had my second appointment and got to hear the heartbeat for the first time. So yeah the first is really to meet each other and make sure you feel comfortable and get some medical details (oh and for you to ask whatever questions you want answered!)

Hi! Hope this isn't too late (but at least if you've had the appointment already you'll be breathing a sigh of relief and shouldn't be worried now)

At my first one (9 weeks), NOTHING AWFUL HAPPENED!! I had read that you have to have a vaginal exam and a breast exam... and this was from a recently enough published NZ book! I was so relieved to find out that if there's no cause for concern, you don't get poked and prodded at all. Just had my bp taken, had to pee on a stick, and she checked the blood and urine test results that the GP had ordered earlier. She asked questions about my medical and family's medical history, and that was about it!

My second appointment was at 13 weeks, and we listened to the baby's heartbeat then - no real nudity required even! It was awesome. I actually enjoy my midwife appointments (apart from the waiting, and holding on to that little stick I peed on earlier!).

Oh yeah, and about the hpt's, someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I've read (again - could be that same book! ha ha ha) that after so many weeks of pregnancy, the hcg hormone levels that the tests read drop away, so I guess that means you could be well and truely pregnant and get a negative result later on... now that would be frightening, so maybe those tests are better left on the shelf for now! (says the woman who used 4 up, just to check in that first week!!! - granted, the first was negative, but still, I couldn't stop myself!).
