The ladies from the Jan/Feb 08 group have been trying to remember Maori songs to sing to their wee ones.

I've ben wracking my brains trying to think of the songs that we used to get sung/sing at school as kids.

I thought I'd start a thread where people can post their favourite songs to sing to their kids.

Hannah seems to like Brahms Lullabye - but with words I make up myself. I think the tune is soothing.

as far as Maori songs go we had to memorise the words to Poi E when i was 6 (grew up in Marton) and i sing that to him..lol otherwise he likes twinkle twinkle and we wish you a merry christmas..and (shoot me now) the songs he sleeps in the car to are Lionel Richie 'Say you Say me' (our wedding song)and Country roads by 'various artists' and Boney M as they are on my CD player..lol:)

Row row row your boat gently down the stream, if you see a crocodile don't forget to scream ... I can't remember the rest

I do this with Cooper and he loves it, will even rock while he's sitting on my lap.

'Smelly bum, smelly bum, what are they feeding you' for nappy changes

Other than that random Irish songs that I know, or don't know with words made up.

OP: Nice name change, all these name changes are making my mummy brain hurt

I sing Te Aroha and Ehara i te mea to Anyssa - they are both lovely (and sort of standard, sing at a powhiri songs)

Te aroho - (the love)
Te whakapono - (the faith)
Me te rangimarie - (the peace)
Tatou, tatou e - (that brings us together)
and

Ehara i te mea
no naianei to aroha
No na tupuna
tuku iho, tuku iho

Also there is - moe moe pepe,
but it is kind of hard if you don't know the tune....

Lol, I never even thought of Sound of Music songs. Chloe always starts smiling and trying to sing when I sing that Wizard of Oz song to her, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", so I reckon that's probably her favourite. I also sing that red nose day song "You Make The Whole World Smile" ever since we had THAT discussion in the Jan/Feb thread as well

I used to sing hush little baby but made up my own words (because what modern girl wants a billy goat or half the other things daddy's going to buy her).

I made up my own words to brahms lullaby too and also sang Baby of Mine (from dumbo and beaches)

Now when I try to sing Michaela covers my mouth to shut me up.

Oh sound of music songs are a good idea (and I know all the words)

Anyssa loves " Hey Baby" from the dirty dancing sound track...

And if you guys don't know "slippery fish" - have a look on you tube for it - it is such a cool song

My boy's fave song EVER is from "My Girl" - remember that movie?!

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it's cold outside
I've got the month of May
Well I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way
My girl, my girl, my girl
Talking bout my girl

(except of course I sing 'my boy' lol. This song makes him go to sleep *every* time).

DJ, I also love Te Aroha and sing it to Harry.... also Ko waiata kia Maria (don't know what it's called but that's the first line). He gets lots of church songs too. Actually he gets whatever song happens to be in my head at the time, and I always have a song in my head. Oh he also really liked "consider yourself" from Oliver when I sung it to him!!

Hmm other songs...
-you are my sunshine
-Skinnamarinky dinky dink (sp?!)
-Twinkle twinkle
-one my mum used to sing me that just goes "shh shh shh, shh shh shh, shh sh sh sh sh shhh, sugarpie"
-You're my honeybunch sugarplum
-Diddle diddle dumpling Harrison John
-Frere Jaques
-Row row your boat

And yeah I make up lots of silly songs too lol.
Mama to DS1 (5 years), DS2 (3 years) and...

Ella's was 'it's all about soul' by Billy Joel, right from day 1

now she's older she loves most anything she can groove to - yesterday she climbed up for the cd remote, pointed it and said "dancing!  wiggle wiggle", then proceeded to spin herself around the room to Op Shop.  Her cd's in her room are brooke fraser, Baby Dub, a classics one, and I forget what else.
