Was just reading the baptism post and made me wonder how people decided who were going to be their kids' godparents?? We've been talking about it for months and aren't sure whether it's better to go for family members (who we are really close to) or someone outside the family, since family will (hopefully) always be there...

My godparents were pretty much a non-event - I've only ever met them once - but DH had really cool godparents that were basically his second family, especially when his dad died. So completely different perspectives!!

Just wondering who people chose and why?

My god parents are my aunty and uncle and I have a lot to do with them, Especially more now I am going to be moving just down the road (well 30km down SHW1) from them.

My boys don't have any godparent yet. But if anything was to happen to me and DH both our parents would be there for the boys - they are still all young enough to handle young children.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Conor's godmother is my sister, that was a given. I was a single mother when he was born.

Nyah, has my best friend who I've known for about 12 years. That was a given. The other people we had in my eyes are no longer her godparents as we have nothing to do with them anymore and never will (long sad story).

We haven't done a naming ceremony for Cooper yet, that will probably be on his first birthday, the other two were done when they were 6 months.

we chose two of our best friends, my best friend and our mutual friend who probably wont be able to have his own children to be godparents

however in our will, thomas goes to chris's brother if anything was to happen we still want him to keep him in the family and I know Tony loves Thomas like his own

We decided to pick from outside of the family as both our families are really close and will always be around. We decided we wanted to pick close friends so they have an important role in our and our childs lives...in saying that we have no plans of having a christening or naming ceremony but he knows he has a "fairy godmother" and "THE godfather".

Ella has 4 godparents- I picked 2 and DH picked 2. I went with my brother and my BF and DH had 2 of this close friends (one of whom is also catholic as we wanted at least one of the godparents to be catholic).

If anything happened to us now Ella would be looked after by my parents, otherwise when she is a bit older it would most probably be my brother.

We have two godparents. Close friends of DH and became my friends as well and they were married but now getting divorced. Also a bit difficult as they are in SA and Kym wants to get out of the country and he wants to stay.

I really dont want my girl to go back there right now but dont know who I am going to ask this side to look after her if anything happens to both of us. One of the big reasons I havent dont a will yet. (I know I know I have to get on to it asap.)

LOL peanut - love the names!! DH would fight to be someone's godfather if he got to get called "THE Godfather"!

We figured that godparents would be different to whoever we named as guardians in our wills - mainly cause we plan on having more than one child and while we'd like them to have different godparents would obviously want them to be kept together if something happened to the both of us.

interesting who everyone picked though... so doesn't necessarily need to be a couple??   that makes it sooo much easier

Nope it doesn't, at the moment we have my dad and my MIl as guardians for the boys. Only problem now is that my parents live overseas.

Charlottes godparents are my best friend (my maid of honour) and DHs best friend (his best man). Kates are my best friend from high school (my other bridesmaid) and my cousin (our usher) who I am really really close to. We picked all of them as they are all people who we will have in our lives long term and they are all 'good' people who I think will have positive influences on the girls. Plus they are the type who take the role seriously- always remember birthdays and they take a real interest in the girls growing up. They were all single at the time of picking so luckily we didn't have to worry about picking couples- we considered DHs other best man but he was married and I felt awkward about picking him but not her IYGWIM?

I got ripped off in the godparent stakes - my brothers both got close family friends and they always got birthday and xmas pressies etc. My sister and I got an aunty and an uncle each and we got nada, my aunty didn't even remember that she was my godmother lol!

Maya has my best friend, who was at her birth, and my brother. Willie was supposed to pick her godfather but the mate he picked was in jail for DIC at the time and there was no way on God's earth I was letting a drunk be her godfather so she got Uncle Johnny at short notice. He's awesome, he always remembers her birthdays etc. and calls her up all the time. Was really special for him to be asked too I think coz he was having a tough time of life at the time and I think it made him feel appreciated.

Sienna has my sister and Willie's brother and Mercedes has my other brother and Willie's sister.

Am thinking of asking my birth support girls to be Chiara's godmothers, not sure who her godfather will be yet tho.

Oh and the girls' godparents aren't their legal guardians should anything happen to me, my parents would take them.

Caitlyn's Godparents are my oldest best friend, which im happy with , i see her all the time , her other godmother is my friend i was at bethany with when i was pregnant, that one i regret, i never see her.
I should have chosen my other bestfriend, her god father is her dad's brother.

Next baby i know who the god parents definitly will be.

I see Godparents these days as more of an honour thing, i dont expect any of her god parents to look after her at the news of my" tragic demise ":

I still keep in touch with my Godmother, although not very often and I haven't seen her for years.  She's a retired Irish nun and went back to Ireland over a decade ago.  I'm quite proud to say my Godmother is a nun (dunno why).  My Godfather was good friends with mum and dad and last I heard he's a judge in Rotorua but we don't keep in touch.

We had a hard time choosing Michaela's Godparents.  For me it was very important to have Godparents who actually go to church (it's part of the Catholic baptism ceremony that the Godparents promise to help guide the child in matters of faith so to have atheist Godparents wasn't an option).

We got lots of pressure from MIL to choose one or two of DH's family members but none of them actually fit the criterea.  At one stage she even suggested we ask our nephew (who's also our God son) since he goes to church - he was only 14 at the time.

In the end I bowed to pressure and compromised.  Michaela has 4 God parents.  Two of DH's brothers plus my younger sister and a friend from our parish.  All Catholics, two church goers and two not.

Rowan's godparents are our closest friends. In the Catholic church at least one godparent has to be Catholic which narrows it down a bit (though we would have chosen them anyway).

We aren't religious so Jack has Guardian Angels instead. We chose my brother and his wife (who has become my BF). We have alot of aquantances but no really good close friends so we chose family. But I suppose we also chose them because they are such wonderful caring people, and we are lucky enough that they are our friends as well.
With #2 I thinkwe will chose my other brother, he doesn't have a GF so I suppose #2 will just have 1 for a while. We will run into problems if we had #3 as I have run out of brothers, and would definately NOT chose DH's sisters!
However in our wills we will name both brothers and SIL as all the kids guardians so as to share the responsibility.

MrsM - Maya's godmother struggled with the faith bit, she's anglican but doesn't go to church and she was really worried about whether she could live up to the faith aspect of being a godmother, but I told her I'd take care of Maya's spiritual education (and it must be working, she's in bed atm reciting Hail Mary as a means of procrastination against going to sleep ).

My brothers don't go to church either but they are baptised and confirmed Catholics and I think my mum lives in hope that they'll see the light one day.

Both my kids have different godparents and we chose people who we thought were really good friends and we would be friends with forever.

In the past few months, Isaacs god mother has turned a bit 'weird' and we don't hear from her

So, in hindsight, we kind of wish we hadn't made them godparents
Isaac is 6, Ethan is 4, Rico is 2 and Hunter is almost 1!
