    Posted: 29 April 2006 at 9:31am
Hannah has just gone out of her capsule into a bigger car seat and I want to know how many of you use the tether strap... I know its the law etc etc, but it means I cant take the pram anywhere with us, with is just stupid. The plunket car seat lady said you cant have anything on top of the strap, and we have a station wagon which means no pram...

as far as i know it isnt law here yet. when i got stopped by the police the other week for a check on the motorway onramp they looked in the back and saw both car seats, neither of which is tethered, and said "that looks great carry on."
some tether straps go into the roof of the car too so maybe look into exactly where yours is located.

Yeah, I was going to suggest the roof thing too. Or on the back of the seat?

I use the tether strap in my car (and others with an anchor bolt already installed) but if we need the carseat and the car doesn't have an anchor bolt I don't worry too much about it, just make sure it is strapped in tight.

i thought you only needed to use the tether strap if you had a particular kind of car, and couldn't strap it in in the usual way or something?? (scuse my vague description, blame preggy brain!)

We use the tether strap on Josiah's car seat, and did when Kiya was in that seat too... but we've put the anchor bolt on the back of the seat so that we can still use the full station wagon boot properly... my parents car (which we're buying) has an anchor bolt underneath the rear seat (its an Emina) for the tether strap to attach to.

You can go to the mechanic and they could maybe install a bolt on the floor closer to the back of the seat so its not using up so much space- or like others have said, the roof. The reason why it is law and plunket are so anal about it is because its safer- if you're in an accident you want the carseat to move as little as possible. When I only have the car seat strapped it wobbles all over the show but we have it tethered and that thing isn't going anywhere!
Maybe you could put the pram in the back seat and belt it in there instead?

Yep we always use the tether strap. We have a SW and where the points are have no problems with things interfering with the straps.

BTW it is law to use the straps if your car seat is designed to be used with a tether strap.

we have a holden wagon and that has the bolt anchor thing in the roof. i had a mazde hatch back before my new car and that was right at the back like it would be in a wagon and I used to unclick the tether strap and put the pushchair under it, not sure if that would help you or not though. We were never too worried about it, if the car didnt have one then it wasnt a big deal as long as they were firmly strapped in

I was looking on the land and transport site and they have a big thing about tether straps - what is legal and what isn't.

My old car had the bolt, so I tethered Maya's seat in, but my VW doesn't and I never got around to getting one put in. She's in a Convertable Toddler Seat now and I just took the tether strap off.

We got our carseat installed at Autolab and we have a station wagon. We haven't lost any room in the boot at all as the anchor point they installed is directly behind the back seat. Still HEAPS of room for stroller and anything else we need to put in there.

umm, I don't know if I am allowed to do this but I always put the pram UNDER the tether strap (it's not touching it, just neatly fits under...)

Iwas told if the seat can teather then it has to be. If it is a seat without one then it is ok. We have ours installed in our car,but some times Alan goes in someone elses car jsut round town and that is ok. I would deffently prefere it being bolted.
