See I don't mind rate increases if they aren't crazy. But I remember sitting at a meeting where the CEO of council took our unit (this was when I was working at council) through the LTCCP and how he said they only wanted to raise rates by 7-8% each year for several years to pay for everything they wanted to do in the city..
So it really grates me when they say without an 11% increase which is more than they had in their 10 year plan they cant provide essential maintenance in the city but they can spend millions on developing a museum which no one goes to.
Yeah

I just listen to everything Stacey says as she is in the same council area (well my house is there) as me and she gives me all the info .
I do have to say 11 is better than the 15 they did talk about.

Rate rises are a PITA but unfortunately you have to pay them. There are always good and bad things about being homeowners I guess.
It farks me off that to get a rates rebate in Chch you have to have an annual household income of no more than $25,000. Um hello? How the heck would someone (or a couple/family whatever) on $25,000 own a home anyway? It's like 'oh we're so good we give our ratepayers rebates' shame that hardly anyone qualifies for them. D*cks.

There are rebates for up to $25K Stace that is how we are getting it. And the only reason we are getting is as Nigel was on the sickness ben. for 5 months.

The nuisance is that they've gone up about that amount for the last couple of reviews!!! Makes me very cross too. Especially when I look at the dorky sculpture thingy on Main Street West/The Square!!!! Argghhhh.
And then they tried to convince us all that 12%ish is necessary or they have to reduce the amount of rubbish/recycling collection! Stupid!!
Thanks Stacey, I needed the vent LOL!

The thing I don't understand is all house prices have increased hugely in the last couple of years so City Councils will getting more anyway because of the increase in house prices. So why then do they also need to increase the rates surely theres a good surplus from the increased house values.

That's the one!!! It cost $100K of all things, made in Australia or by an Australian (nothing against Australians but ... go figure?!) and when I queried it as part of my rates rise submission, they said it cost them "only" $50K because the other half was donated. Yeah, well, "only $50K" would look quite nice against a rates drop

I dont get it, are Australians bad artists? What has the connection to Australia got to do with it being bad?
Anyhoo, our property was worth more June 2007 then it is worth June 2008 by about $15000.00. We are paying for the relocation of possums that are not even in our area and of course the crap auckland transport system! Grrrrr at the the rate rises!

Cause its in Palmerston North and that's got nothing to do with Australia.
Oh and house prices going up doesn't have anything to do with how much rates go up, as the total value of housing goes up at a similar rate comparatively within each region.
Rates will go up every year regardless of the market value of your house.

For the out-of-towners, here's the sculpture
You will have to click on the 7 April 2008 pic and scroll down for a good-sized photo of it.
