So my little girl is almost 9 months old. She used to sleep through the night from about 5 months - not any more
Our routine is:
5.30 am breastfeed, nappy change, back to bed.
7.00 am breakfast (baby muesli with fruit or yoghurt and a bit of marmite toast)
around 9.30 back to bed
around 11.30 bf
around 12.30 lunch (vegies, meat and fruit)
around 2 pm back to bed
3 pm bf
inbetween little snack, rice cracker or bikkies
4.30 pm dinner (vegies meat and fruit)
around 5.30 last bf and to bed.

I think she's eating quite well but for the past week she keeps on waking again during the night and won't settle without me breastfeeding her.
Any advise? I want my nights back and I want to reduce bf and not increase them.

Have you tried giving her a later bedtime? Like 6.30pm instead of 5.30pm? Kylahs routine at the age was pretty simular except she was going to bed at 7pm and waking at 7am.. I would give her dinner at 6pm, bottle at 6.45 and bed.. That way she was full.

Not sure.

How long has she been waking for? Is she also going thru a developmental milestone - e.g. crawling (the baby whisperer says that it is normal for babies to wake at night when learning something new), or teething?

Is she movign around in her cot more and waking herself up?

If it has just been a few days she has been waking, I'd tend to roll with it, and it will probably get better soon - or start doing a dreamfeed before you go to be to hopefully see her thru.

My wee girl is about the same age and has a similar ish routine:

7am -bf
8ish - breakfast
9ish - bed
11ish - bf
12ish - lunch
1ish - bed
3-4ish bf
afternoon snack
5ish - dinner
6.30 -bf and bed

This was the routine that was introduced to Blair and myself when I sought help for him sleeping, by the wonderful women at a unit here in Hamilton. It was very structured whilst we were there but I have now adapted it to suit us a little bit more. Blair was days off turning 7 months when we went

7am get up, BF then solids allowing an hour from the time you start to the time you finish. I found this worked well if he had a small break between milk and solids.
2 hours after getting up, back to bed for 3 hours - sometimes he would sleep all 3, otherwise he would sometimes be up earlier.

The next feed would take place 5 hours after the last one started.
so 12 feed, play, 2pm bed
5pm feed, play/bath 7pm bed
and I would do a late feed/dream feed at 10pm.

The first day we just took the start of the day from his last feed - ie he had his bfast at 9 that day so worked from then, and then I dragged by lazy self out of bed at 7 the next morning.

I'm not saying it's right for everyone, but it worked for us, and after I had had broken sleep every night from mid Jan to mid May, this was amazing. (and it's still only 4 BF)

Otherwise, if not wanting to adapt something like this, I would also suggest a later bed time, and hope for a eg 7 - 7 sleep

I've tried to put her to bed later, she will still wake up around 5. I can handle that though, but now she also wakes up any time between 11 and 2 and seems to need one more bf. She's not crawling yet, only comes up on her knees and rocks sometimes. Have you guys switched to giving milk before solids yet? Could it be that?

We are now solids before milk, I slowly intro'd it a meal at a time over a period of a week, and now try to have a decent break between dinner and the milk feed a the end of the day - usually bath or shower before a BF, as I'm wondering if it's time for me to start looking at dropping the dream feed. (Blair doesn't think so after waking at 1.30 this morning and not settling without) but when I do it will also be gradual.

How much is she taking at her last 2 BF? I would be tempted to stretch it out, and intro a dream feed

Monicamouse, she has a big feed at the afternoon bf but the last one before bed not so much. I think she's simply too tired. That's why I find it so hard to put her to bed later than 5.30, 6 o'clock. She's just ready for bed by then. How many bf does Blair have a day?

Blair has 4 BF in total. 3 after solids, B'fast/Lunch/Dinner, and a late feed - somewhere between 10 and 11. I'm so lucky that we've phase shifted his bodyclock, so we generally gon't get out of bed until 8ish, and as a bonus he gets a good hour sometimes two with DH at the end of the day.

I'm lucky that my problem was never Blair waking early. but more so not sleeping. I would be guessing that she's tired early because of when her day started. When I spoke to plunket about night feeds (I was still doing a 3am at 6.5months) they suggested water, and at the MCU we went cold turkey - and I didn't attend to him in the middle of the night, the staff taught him to settle. (It involved CIO which I was not a big fan of, but it worked) and I haven't had to a early get up for ages. I'm wonderiing if you could push her wakeup time back and then transistion the rest of the day as well.

Hi Alanismum. Our DS is a couple of weeks younger than your bub, and we have a similar routine to you ... and similar waking issues some nights. However, DS stays in bed from 7pm-7am and we use a dummy to send him back to sleep, which he does with no fuss. Sometimes he won't settle until his nappy is changed, but that's quite a rare occurrence.  Was just wondering whether you could try extending bedtime out by allowing for a quick nap around the time you usually feed dinner? DS gets really tired by 5pm and wouldn't last until 7pm without that nap, or sometimes just a rest in his cot.

At the moment our routine is:

7.00 am breakfast (bottle first, solids 30 mins later)
around 9.00 back to bed (sometimes sleeps 1 hr, other times 2hrs)
11.30 am bottle
12.00 lunch
around 1.30 pm back to bed (usually sleeps for 1 or 2 hrs)
4.00 pm bottle
around 4.30 back to bed for quick nap (30-45 mins)

5.30pm dinner then bath and last bottle at 6.45pm. In bed by 7pm

A few weeks ago Lauren was waking 2 sometimes 3 times a night and I had to feed her to get her back to sleep. So I decided to introduce a dreamfeed at 10:30pm every night for nearly 6 weeks and this broke the habit of her waking through the night. I have now dropped the dreamfeed again and she is still sleeping through. Not sure whether it was because perhaps she was extra hungry or maybe she had created a habit of waking, whichever the case maybe, its now solved! Maybe you could try the dreamfeed for a few weeks to break the habit??

We also do solids before milk here, but DD is f/f now, I stopped b/f at 7 months. She is on 3 x 200ml feeds per day now. She goes to bed at 6pm usually, and sleeps through till between 5 and 6am.

Hi, my boy is only 7 months old, but this seems to work for us:

7am - bottle, solids at 7.45am
9am - back to bed
10.30/11 - up and snack
12pm - lunch
2.30 - up and bottle
3pm - bed
4.30/5 - up
5.30 - dinner
6.45 - bottle and bed

So we have a combo of solids and bottle first. Jack sort of switched himself over and also only takes 600ml now which is apparently very normal.

Does she eat well in the morning? If she seems ravenous, she probably hasn't had enough the day before, but if she's not hungry then those night time or early morning feeds should be cut. We also give milk as a last resort if Jack wakes up, and he'll take water from his cup before I give him milk. Bad habits and all that.

Seeing as most of the Oct 07 mums have posted, I thought I would too

We do solids before milk and I find that Eva eats alot more, than when she was having milk first.. It might be worth trying. She's been on formula since 8 months. This is out routine, which we've been following since she was 8 months. Eva sleeps through until about 6.15am, but I leave her in her cot playing until closer to 7am.

7am Brekkie
9am Milk
9.30 - 10.30 Nap
11am - Snack (fruit)
12 - Lunch
1.30pm - Milk
2-3pm - Nap
3pm - snack
5pm - Dinner
6.15pm - Milk (doesn't always want it)
6.30pm - bath
7pm - bed

Thanks for your great input ladies. We had our 8-10 months Plunket check today, so I brought up the issue as well. The Plunket nurse also advised me to switch to solids before milk first and having quite a big time gap between solids and milk feed. She also said if it doesn't work to try introducing a dream feed.
I've already dropped our afternoon milk feed as she seemed to fill up on that not wanting much for dinner an hour later. Instead I am giving her a little snack around 3, have dinner between 4.30 and 5. so far it has worked once this week and she slept through for 12 hours.
Now another question, for those of you who have been breastfeeding and started to introduce formula quite late, how did you do it? Alani doesn't take a bottle and it seems to make more sense to give her a cup. I would really like to start weaning her slowly, so I can have my body back by the time she is one.

Just a suggestion, but how about introducing a cup and straw for maybe one of her milk feeds?

Lauren drinks 150mls of water a day from a little cup with a straw and she manages far better with that than a sippy cup! You can get the little cups with a straw attached from the supermarket for about $2 or $3 and they hold up to 200mls of liquid. Perhaps just start with water to get her used to it first, or maybe just offer half a milk feed

I am just making suggestions here by the way, do whatever works for you!!

I slowly stopped b/f at 7 months. Just one feed per week until she was not having anything from me at all. I thoroughly loved b/f, BUT am sooooo grateful to have my body back to mysef!!
