Topic: Baby in transverse position Posted: 30 August 2008 at 6:38pm |
Hi, I'm pretty sure baby has been lying transversely for the last 3 days or so and it is sooooooo uncomfortable. I'm only coming up to 27 weeks so she is likely to turn on her own isn't she? Is there anything I can do to encourage her to turn so I don't have the horrible pain in my right side when she jabs/kicks/does any kind of movement?! Thanks!

Can you try and push her head down on the left hand side to get her to move?? Or try moving around on your hands and knees that is meant to get them to move.
It is likely that she will move on her own, she still does have some room to move at the moment.

You could try all fours or even lying down, relaxed, and trying to prod her into a more comfy position. You have heaps of time left in terms of her turning into the right position for birthing so no need to worry about that (until at least 35 weeks!)

Thanks for such a fast reply! I don't know if I could push her around- she's kicking and punching at either side but I'm not sure which end of her is which lol . But thanks for the tip on the hands and knees, I'll definitely give that a go!!

My DS was transverse until about 33 weeks and then turned head down. TBH I loved it as he wasn't sitting on my bladder and I never got woken at night for toilet stops etc.
Its a catch 22 I suppose!

Apparently sleeping on your left side can help get them into place - not sure if it works this early but it's probably worth a try! Failing that, sleeping on your right side puts them in posterior position which you won't necessarily want at birth time but still will be more comfy than what you're experiencing!
When I was pg with Briona she went breech with her head under my ribs, so I used to push back, pretty firmly, to get her to move to a more comfy spot. Ribs = not comfy!!!!
LOL Becks we just about snapped above.

I would get your MW to check her position at your next visit (which must be soon as you are nearing fortnightly visits). If she is transverse then she will be able to tell you what you can do and not do. If it continues then I think they send you to an OB to manually try and move her later on in pregnancy.

Thanks so much for your suggestion and experiences! My next MW visit is in a couple of weeks so I'll definitely ask. Hopefully doing some of the things you have all suggested will work though! Thanks again

DS was transverse until 34-35 weeks and then turned (albeit posterior little devil). I had an appointment with my specialist at 34 weeks and was booked in for ECV at 37 weeks but he turned on his own so all was OK.

My baby was traverse lying for ages...from when MW started feeling for her til about 34 weeks! I didn't want to do too much to turn her myself, as I didn't want her to go breech cuz then she'd have to do a full 180 to get in the right position lol.
I don't think it will be a problem til later on in the pregnancy so don't try to worry too much! Apparently it's unusual for a 1st time mum cuz the uterus hasn't been stretched before. Hope you feel special lol

I've heard that if your lying down for a spell try to play some music on a portable cd or walkman and have the speaker or headphones down by your pubic bone and it's supposed to coax baby into moving toward the sound. I dont know how true this is but I read it somewhere...LOL....

I had a scan at 33 wks because they thought DD was transverse - the week before the scan I kept telling her to move around and she did! First and last time she has done what she was told.
I know about the pain in the side - I slept on the other side to where the main bump was to encourage her to move out of the way!
There is plenty of time for her to move yet.

Solitaire - My baby was and some time still is in transverse position and yes its very uncomfy...I find that I try to feel bothe sides to see where I can feel some thing and then just gently massage tummy and most times baby seems to move. Try it...

Ayja was in transverse lie until about 33 weeks.
I did the all fours thing, either that or i practised leaning forward. Ie sitting on edge of chair, legs apart, and lean on your hands/elbows onto your knees/legs, this places your pelvis further back and your tummy hanging over the floor basically. Just make sure you are sitting back enough that your pelvis is supported by the chair, but not so far back that it negates the purpose. do this while watching tv, everything really - especially reading - ie stick magazines down on the floor and lean over like that and read them. I got really used to sitting like that.
I still did it further on once she had turned to make sure she didn't turn back, and i'd be like that and lean my upper body on my exercise gym ball and watch tv like it. It's a nice way to help baby engage a bit later too, cos you are opening your pelvis up and leaning forward i have heard can make baby swing around so their back is facing out too - which is where you want it to be.
