How can midwife tell how big bubs is going to be approximately and when can she tell???? Is it just by looking at scans or by measurement of belly????

They will start measuring your fundal height when you get to your 2 weekly appointments. The fundal height equates to how many weeks along you are (1cm = 1 week), so they get an idea from that if bub is developing OK and the right size for gestation.

If you have a scan later in your pregnancy they can give you a good estimate on size.

But as my midwife told me (after DH had asked her for the thousandth time how big the baby was going to be), there is no sure fire way to know. Some women get huge and have small babies, some women barely show and have whoppers.

My midwife gave in and told me on the day that I went into labour that she thought Mason would be 8-8 1/2 lb. He ended up being 8lb9oz. But I think she was guessing!

i was tiny-ish both times, (but still felt huge!) and for me, Paris being 7 lb 3 was large - the largest in my family in fact! the midwife had told me she'd be maybe 5 to 6 pound so over 7 lb was GREAT!

Ayja on the other hand - always felt bigger, and measured bigger in scans, but was tiny and still is. 6lb 2oz born.   there's no sure fire way - they can usually just get a rough idea by measurements and size of your belly but it depends on how tall, thickset, chubby, your baby is and how much fluid you have as to how big baby is and how much you show as well.

nothings is for sure

Even the growth scans can be a pound out either way.

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks as my m/w thought Maya was measuring big and the scan estimated her at 7lb9oz at that stage. She was born 2 weeks later 9lb1oz, so I figure it was pretty accurate in our case.

I was measuring 42 weeks at 38 weeks, but the m/w thinks that was just because Maya was quite long as well so she was taking up a lot of space in there.

Well I don't know if its usual but when I was pregnant with Alex my midwife used to have a good feel of my tummy and make a "guesstimate" (that's what she called it). She started doing that from when I was about 36 weeks pregnant and each week she would guess an extra half a pound, then when I was in labour she did it again. She reckoned about 9-9 & 1/2 pounds and he ended up being 9 pound 2 so it was a pretty good guess I reckon.

Im now measuring a week ahead, sounds like I will be having a scan on Monday to see how big she is because of the gestational diabetes thing. Im getting scared I might have to push out a 10lb baby!

Well Xanda was 10lb8oz and my midwife once told me she thought he was going to be around 8lb. She never once measured me or weighed me. I not to sure where she got the 8lb from as I was huge, didn't realise how big I was until I looked at a photo taken of me the day I went into labour. Because my midwife never weighed me or measured me I had problems during labour due to the fact that he was too big too fit out and I ended up having a c-section. The doctor then did not cut big enough and they got him stuck trying to get him out.

Anyway what I am saying is that you can't always know how big baby is going to be because it all depends on where they are sitting and what position they are in, and that is forever changing.

Sorry for the novel.

I was measuring small based on fundal height but went in for a growth scan and she was measured at 9lbs (so definitely not freaking small)
She was born at 9lbs 6oz

My first was 9lb 5oz nobody warned me then although I was under a dr cause you did't have indepant midwifes then and with Brooke the midwife said on my last visit before having her that she will be around 8 1/2 Lb and she was 8lb 6 oz so pretty damn close I'd say.

Hi
I think also, that your baby can have growth spurts, so a scan or measurement is based on current growth but they may be entering or finishing a growing phase. I think the scan asumes they will grow at a constant rate throughout.
